Gregory earns Dean’s List honors at Virginia Tech

Lauren Gregory, a 2015 graduate of New Kent High School, was named to Virginia Tech’s Dean’s List for the Spring 2018 semester. In order to be recognized for the achievement, a student must be enrolled as a full-time student and accumulate a grade-point average of 3.4 or higher.

Proclaiming Grace Outreach food pantry celebrates 10 years of service

Proclaiming Grace Outreach Food Pantry, located in the Barhamsville area of New Kent, is celebrating 10 years of service. The food pantry operates every first and third Friday of each month and has provided more than 300,000 pounds of food within the last 10 years. The food pantry was awarded an grant by Feedmore last year that assisted with the purchase of a new walk-in cooler. The organization will highlight its celebration in conjunction with its annual Jenna Bash Festival at Rockahock Campground on Aug. 4, 11 a.m. There will be a parking fee of $3 this year with all…

New Kent Sheriff’s Office lip sync to strengthen community ties

Sometimes the best way to get a message out to the community, you have to adapt to the situation. That’s what New Kent Sheriff’s Office chose to do in one of the more unique ways sweeping across the county. New Kent Sheriff’s Office accepted a lip sync challenge that is sweeping across the nation. The challenge found its way to New Kent and is used to bring a sense of community. Editorial: Roundabout at the intersection of Route 5 and Route 106 in Charles City? Not for me

A roundabout at the intersection of Route 5 (John Tyler Memorial Highway) and Route 106 (Roxbury Road) in Charles City? Not the way to go. At Tuesday night’s board meeting, a resolution was passed to support the Smart Scale Application. The Smart Scale is essentially used to provide a point system to address problems on roadways. According to Charles City assistant zoning administrator Myles Busching, one of the proposals currently topping the list is a roundabout at that intersection. RCC offering diesel certificate program at New Kent site

Rappahannock Community College’s (RCC) New Kent Site will offer a Diesel Mechanics Technology Certificate program starting this fall. The new certificate is designed to educate students in some skills as the Diesel Mechanics Technology Career studies, but will be geared more towards “soft skills” that are necessary to work at a medium to large-sized company. “I’m excited about this program,” said RCC Diesel program lead instructor Steve Patt. “It will make our students more promotable within the field.” For more information on the program, call (804) 557-2959 or visit www.rappahannock.edu/newkent.
