Host families sought for foreign exchange students in Charles City and New Kent

Foreign Links Around the Globe (F.L.A.G.), a non-profit organization that serves Charles City and New Kent, is seeking host families for foreign exchange students for the upcoming year. The organization has hosted families from more than 50 counties and is looking for homes for the 2017-18 school year. Foreign exchange students are based in these home to learn more about the United States and to continue their growth in the English language. NKHS grad selected for ACI summer training session

Reid Eaton, a 2015 graduate of New Kent High School, will be taking part in the Autistic Camp Inclusion (ACI) training program to be held June 10-17 at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. The program is sponsored by the Autistic Self Advocacy Network which, according to its website, seeks to advance principles of the disability rights movement with regard to autism. The organization is run by and for autistic people with the goal of ensuring that those with autism enjoy equal access, rights, and opportunities.

Arts Alive announces summer camp offerings

Arts Alive is offering two summer camps for interested children at West Point public schools. The Summer Arts Camp, sponsored by Charles City-James City-New Kent-York County Farm Bureau is June 26-30, 9 a.m.-3:15 p.m. Classes included dance, visual art, music and more. Courses are available for grade kindergarten to age 14 with a coast of $45 for each week-long class or $150 for four week-long classes. Missoula Children’s Theatre Camp is Aug. 7-12. Campers will rehearse and attend workshops, concluding with two performances of “The Tortoise vs. The Hare” on Aug. 12 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Camp is…

Jones to attend Sorensen Institute

New Kent High School senior Julianna Jones has been selected as a participant of the Sorensen Institute at the University of Virginia in July as part of the organization’s High School Leaders Program. The institute offers two-week classes for students to diverge in Virginia politics, policy, governance, ethics in leadership, and bipartisanship. The program is designed to build knowledge and skills for the attendees to step forward into leadership rolls within their communities.
