McClellan nominated for service award

Senator Jennifer McClellan, who represents Charles City County, has been nominated for the Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award. Presented by EMILY’s List, the award recognizes a woman who is serving in state or local office. McClellan is one of six women nationwide to receive the nomination. “It has been an incredible honor to serve Virginia in the General Assembly,” McClellan said in a pressed release. “I’m both humbled and excited to have my service recognized by EMILY’s List for an award that celebrates the commitment to community and public service.”

Ribbon-cutting christens Heritage Public Library’s relocation in New Kent

After a year in the making, New Kent’s branch of the Heritage Public Library has a new, permanent home. Saturday morning’s ribbon cutting ceremony put the exclamation point on the library’s relocation to the Maidstone Development Park. With 100 people in attendance, including several state and local dignitaries, the once abandoned Colonial Virginia Bank building now houses thousands of books. “There were lots of people who didn’t think this would happen,” said outgoing Heritage Public Library director Barbara Winters, who will be relocating to Minneapolis to spend more time with her family. “There were a few times where the library’s…

An informal alliance of Lanexa neighbors is making sure that their healthful excursions up and down their neighborhood roads accomplish more than just increased heart rates. Bill Hill and Karen Hershberg take daily walks along their highways, picking up litter on a daily basis as part of their morning excursions. For Hill, it was a doctor prescribed walking regimen to improve his health that initiated his clean-up campaign.
