GFOA award presented to New Kent’s finance department

New Kent County’s Financial Services Department received the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its budget. The award is presented to departments that meet the guidelines of a satisfactory budget. Those areas include how the budget is a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communications device. Bottom of the Bridge LaSertoma offering youth service award

Bottom of the Bridge LaSertoma is pleased to announce through fundraisers, the organization will sponsor a $100 Youth Service Award to a New Kent student. The award is to recognize a youth in the community that exemplifies leadership and community service. To be eligible, a student must be a resident of New Kent and recognized for outstanding performance in the areas of volunteer community service and school-required service activities. Applications are available at each of the New Kent schools’ guidance offices, or by calling Brenda Johnston at 932-9423. Applications are due by Mar. 3.

RCC offering scholarships for the 2017-18 academic year

Rappahannock Community College is offering scholarships for the 2017-18 academic year. Students interested in attending the community college can apply for scholarships through the university’s website, www.rappahanock.edu, or visit the Glenns Campus. There are more than $400,000 in scholarships available to prospective students. Students only need to fill out one application to become eligible for all academic scholarships. Escalona named to St. Mary’s College Dean’s List

Elizabeth Escalona, a native of Lanexa, was named to Saint Mary’s College Dean’s List for the 2016 fall semester. To earn the academic recognition, a student must achieve a grade point average of 3.6 or higher, have no incompletes, take at least 12 credit hours, and not have a grade lower than a “C.”

New Kent County Fair recognized with several awards

The New Kent County Fair Association won several communication awards at the 100th annual Virginia Association of Fairs Convention. The fair received two blue ribbons (first place), two red ribbons (second place), and three white ribbons (third place) during the early January recognition. Areas that awards were received included fair booklets, posters, scrapbooks, and website presentation. New Kent’s County Fair Association competes in the class of with fairs that have 7,000 of fewer visitors. This year’s fair is scheduled for Aug. 11-13 at New Kent High School. NKHS ‘Empty Bowls’ project raises $988 for food pantry

New Kent High School’s culinary arts department concluded its third annual Empty Bowls project and raised money for a local organization. Students created 70 bowls that were auctioned, raising $988 for the New Kent County social services food pantry. A chili night accompanied the auction as winning bidders received the meal in their bowls. Under the direction of high school teacher Susan Musselman, the project has raised $2,774 over a three-year span.
