Three New Kent residents were among the 93 graduates from Rappahannock Community College’s summer session. Cameron Baldwin, James Giffin, and Cullen Kettle received their academic credentials by completing curriculum requirements. Giffin graduated Magna Cum Laude (acquiring a grade-point average ranging from 3.5 to 3.79) and also as a member of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, while Cullen Kettle was recognized as a “Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges.” Students will receive an opportunity to march during the next commencement processional in May 2017.
The Visual Arts Committee of Arts Alive Inc. will hold a photography exhibit from Nov. 15-Dec. 13 at the Robinson/Olsson auditorium. The exhibit will display photography exhibits from locals that will be hung on walls for others to view. A formal exhibit will be held on Dec. 10 prior to the Tenore’ performance. A Charles City vineyard received a $250,000 grant as part of the United States Department of Agriculture’s grants through the Value-Added Producer Grant program. The Virginia Rural Development office’s Oct. 27 press release announced that Upper Shirley Vineyards LLC was one of 20 recipients to receive money through the program. The American Red Cross, in partnership with Senior Connections, is offering smoke alarms to residents in Charles City and New Kent County. Currently the organization has installed 21 smoke alarms in the localities. The project is part of Fire Prevention Week to raise awareness.
