New Kent Democrats to host unassembled caucus

New Kent’s Democratic Party will hold an Unassembled Caucus on Saturday, Apr. 16, 12-1:30 p.m. at Rose and Crown Tavern. The gathering is to elect five delegates and three alternatives to the First Congressional District Convention. Those wishing to run for election must submit a pre-filing form with Donna Friend. Forms are available online at www.newkentdems.org and are due Saturday, Apr. 9, 5 p.m. Forms may be emailed to chair@newkentdems.org or mailed to Friend at P.O. Box 172, New Kent, VA 23124.

New Kent native, actress receives ‘best supporting’ award at film festival

“Jack of the Red Hearts,” the movie in which New Kent’s very own Taylor Richardson co-stars as an autistic child, ended its movie theater run Feb. 29. The movie played in 25 major metropolitan cities across the nation and was shown exclusively in AMC movie theaters. (There are no AMC theaters in the Richmond area, the nearest being in Northern Virginia.) The movie was filmed in New York. Local students earn academic honors at JTCC

Several local students were recognized for academic honors by John Tyler Community College for success during the Fall 2015 semester. Recognized on the Honor’s List are Lena Duke of Charles City, Casey Rapalee of Providence Forge, Cecilia Garner, Carter Gilland, and John Sweat, all of New Kent, and Samantha Chapman and Kaylin Seely, both of Quinton. Bottom of the Bridge LaSertoma offering $1,500 scholarship

The Bottom of the Bridge LaSertoma is pleased to announce that the organization will be offering a $1,500 scholarship grant to a New Kent High School senior pursuing a college education. To be eligible for the Scholarship Grant Award, a high school senior can apply for the scholarship grant. The scholarship is based on financial/special needs, transcript of grades, future education, and community work/leadership. The student selected will compete for an additional $1,000 scholarship grant through LaSertoma International. The deadline date for receipt of scholarship applications is May 2. Former New Kent student shaves head for cancer research

Tim Mathis, a 2014 graduate of New Kent High School and current student at Rappahannock Community College, participated in the “Shave to Raise” event in Hampton Roads. Mathis was part of a six-person team that shaved their heads to raise money to fight childhood cancer. Dual enrollment students participate in New Kent health fair

Dual enrollment students from Rappahannock Community College who currently attend Bridging Communities Career and Technical Center in New Kent recently participated in a health fair at New Kent’s Health and Human Services Department on Mar. 9. Nursing students received hands-on opportunities to work with patients as part of the program. Activities conducted included measuring blood pressure, height, weight, pulse, and respiratory rate. Students also provided written results to patients as part of the nursing aide program. Participating students were Chynna Berry, Destiny Davis, Amber Holmes, Dominique Palermo, and Mackenzie Perkins, all of New Kent, and Jasmine Dabney of Charles City.

NK business awards set for May 19

New Kent’s Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Economic Development Authority (EDA) will host its annual business appreciation dinner and award ceremony on May 19 at Royal New Kent Golf Club. A total of six awards are selected by community members. Award categories include small business of the year, large business of the year, “At Your Service award”, “Made in New Kent” award, workforce development award, and business citizen of the year award. Community members are invited to vote for members by visiting www.newkentchamber.org. Deadline to vote is Apr. 15.

CCVFD/EMS to hold recruiting classes

Charles City Volunteer Fire/EMS will hold classes for interested people who want to become a firefighter. In order to continue to work hard and provide the best service to county citizens, Firefighter-1 classes will begin on Monday, Apr. 25 at Station 1 on Adkins Road for new recruits. It’s time to clean up the county. Right now, our community is filthy. The litter that is accumulating alongside New Kent roadways is increasing daily. Some litter is within eyesight of resident’s mailboxes. Why is it not picked up? Ignoring litter is as bad as tossing it there. New Kent is an extension of our homes.
