Two New Kent residents earn degrees from Rappahannock Community College

Two New Kent residents were among 66 students who earned degrees or certificates from Rappahannock Community College from Fall 2015. Ryan Sherenco and Ethan Smith were among those recognized for meeting academic standards to graduate from the college. Sherenco will graduate cum laude, posting a grade-point average between 3.2-3.49. Students received their degrees and will have an opportunity to march during the commencement ceremony at the conclusion of the spring semester.

Awards available for youth through Bottom of the Bridge LaSertoma

Bottom of the Bridge LaSertoma is pleased to announce through fundraisers, the organization will sponsor a $100 Youth Service Award to a New Kent student. The award is to recognize a youth in the community that exemplifies leadership and community service. To be eligible, a student must be a resident of New Kent and recognized for outstanding performance in the areas of volunteer community service and school-required service activities. Applications are available at each of the New Kent schools’ guidance offices, or by calling Brenda Johnston at 932-9423. Applications are due by Mar. 2.

New Kent citizens reminded of deadlines to vote in primary election

New Kent citizens are reminded to make sure they are registered in the precinct in which they live in order to be qualified to vote. In order to vote in the Mar. 1 primary election, citizens are to be registered no later than Feb. 8, 5 p.m. at the voter registration officer, located inside the Health & Human Serivce building, located at 7911 Courthouse Way, Suite 400, New Kent. The office is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Absentee voting is now being accepted, with the last day for mailed applications Feb. 23. The voter registration office will also be open…

Quinton resident earns Dean’s List honors from Indiana State

John Lloyd, a resident of Quinton, has earned Dean’s List honors from Indiana State University for the fall semester of 2015. A grade-point average (GPA) of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale is required to be eligible for the list. Lloyd, a freshman, plans to major in professional aviation flight technology.

VECF awards $180,000 grant to Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond division

Virginia Early Childhood Foundation (VECF) awarded Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond, a school readiness initiative that serves localities in the greater Richmond area including Charles City and New Kent, a $180,000 grant. Art exhibition, workshop highlights Art Alive February activities

Arts Alive will present a workshop and an exhibit in the month of February. On Feb. 3, Collage: Creating Energy and Excitement in Your Art workshop will be available. Participants can create collages from tissue paper, brayer acrylics, and more on a variety of mediums. From Feb. 9-Mar. 15, the Participant’s Art from Arts Alive exhibition will be displayed in the Robinson/Olsson Auditorium. On Feb. 27 at 6:30 p.m., The Rock & Roll Jubilee will highlight the exhibit.
