CCEF announces new officers for 2016

Charles City’s Educational Foundation (CCEF) has announced its new officers for 2016. Jackie Stewart will serve as president of the foundation for the new year. Barbara Winters was elected secretary and Rob Tyler will serve as treasurer during the new term.

CC Health Coalition joins HEAL cities on health movement

Charles City County announced the joining of the county to the Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL) cities and town campaigns for the Mid-Atlantic. A November resolution passed by county supervisors allows HEAL to join with Charles City County Health Coalition to carry out the implementation of the adopted resolution. The resolution focuses on improving access to healthy foods and physical activity in both small and large communities throughout Maryland and Virginia. VCU partners with Region 1 schools to form autism consortium

Virginia Commonwealth University’s (VCU) School of Education is partnering with the state’s Region 1 school divisions to establish the Region 1 Autism Education Consortium. The region, including the school districts of Charles City and New Kent, will help serve approximately 2,200 students who identify or exhibit characteristics of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and receive services at the school. Farm Bureau scholarships available in February

Applications for the Charles City-James City-New Kent-York Farm Bureau Scholarship program will be available in February at local high schools and two Farm Bureau locations. The scholarship program is open to all seniors residing in the four counties and seniors whose parents are members of the CC-JC-NK-YK Farm Bureau, regardless of their county of residence. Any student interested in agriculture should apply. Office locations are 3408 Rescue Drive, Providence Forge (Charles City, James City, and New Kent); and 1215 George Washington Memorial Highway, Yorktown (York).

CVHS to assist patrons in enrollment of healthcare plan

Central Virginia Health Services Inc. (CVHS) is offering assistance to enroll in the Health Insurance Marketplace until the Jan. 31 deadline. CVHS staff is currently located at the Charles City Regional Health Services building. Throughout the enrollment process, Certified Application Counselors (CAC) will be available to meet with groups or individuals to answer questions and help with the enrollment process. The counselors will also assist consumers to identify if they qualify for an exemption. Letter to the Editor: Disappointed no bands appeared in Providence Forge parade

Wow! There were 99 units in the Christmas parade at Providence Forge on Sunday, Dec. 13. But there were no bands. What’s a parade without a band? Last year, Charles City sent their band and they were invited this year but did not respond. The parade was an hour late starting, but the logistics of lining up 99 units is mindboggling. They had to park them on the highway as spectators lined both sides of the highway and were excitedly patient. Letter to the Editor: Water-ski ordinance should remain untouched

I would like to bring the upcoming hearing concerning water-skiing on Chickahominy Lake to the attention of New Kent residents. Two county residents have been repeatedly lobbying for the county’s board of supervisors to repeal the ban on water-skiing in the lake. This is a bad idea and the regulation should remain for several reasons. First, there are the recreational opportunities. Chickahominy Lake is currently an area where it is still safe to kayak, canoe, and operate smaller water craft because of this regulation.
