Delays in VDOT projects frustrate New Kent supervisor

At least one New Kent supervisor is frustrated with delayed Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) projects. And he let VDOT representatives know about it once again during the Oct. 13 regular scheduled meeting of the county’s board of supervisors. District 1 representative Thomas Evelyn admitted he was trying to hold back his anger and displeasure over two projects that have been scheduled to take place within his district. New Kent subdivision residents concerned about location of duck blinds

Residents of one New Kent subdivision are raising concerns over one property owner’s duck hunting blinds that they feel are too close to their neighborhood. Homeowners in The Colonies subdivision in Lanexa addressed New Kent supervisors during the board’s Oct. 13 regular monthly meeting on their fears surrounding recently placed duck blinds on adjacent property. Duck blinds are hunting accessories that provide cover for hunters to help reduce the chance of detection while hunting water fowl. Lane closures for repair projects to occupy Interstate 64 overnight hours

There will be two Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) projects in New Kent in the upcoming week. –There will be alternating lane closures on Oct. 12-15, 10 p.m.-5 a.m. on Interstate 64 eastbound between mile markers 208-209 for ITS equipment installation. –The right lane both east and westbound on Interstate 64 at Bottoms Bridge (mile marker 205) will be closed on Oct. 13-14 from 9 p.m.-5 a.m. for maintenance of the weight in motion scales.

Charles City schools post high graduation rate, zero percent drop-out

Information released by Virginia’s Department of Education (VDOE) reveal that Charles City High School has one of the highest on-time graduation rates in the state. The on-time graduation rate is monitored by the state and tracks the number of students who enter into their freshman year and graduate in four years. Charles City posted a 98.25 percent for on-time graduation, easily surpassing the state mark of 90.5 percent. Charles City public schools is also one of three jurisdictions in the state to post a drop-out rate of zero percent. Data released indicate that only Falls Church City schools and King…

Burglary duo among new arrest in New Kent

Two men who allegedly robbed a home in New Kent have been arrested by New Kent Sheriff’s Office. Jason B. Dunlow, 19, and Gregory R. Wilhelm, 46, both of Aylett, were both charged with one count each of grand larceny and intent to sell stolen property. Wilhelm received an additional charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. According to the arrest report, on July 14 of this year a residence off Tunstall Road was burglarized with items stolen that included firearms. More eastbound paving on Interstate 64 in New Kent scheduled for week of Oct. 4-8

Virginia’s Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced paving projects for the upcoming week in New Kent for Oct. 4-8 on Interstate 64 eastbound. –From mile markers 209-224, there will be alternating lane closures from 7 p.m.-6 a.m. for paving. –The exit ramp from Route 33 (Eltham Road) to Interstate 64 east (at mile marker 220) will be closed from 7 p.m.-6 a.m. for paving. A detour will be in place to direct traffic.

New Kent supervisors approve master plan for Pine Fork Park

Another hurdle has been cleared in a long process to build a public park in the central area of New Kent. During their Sept. 30 work session, county supervisors unanimously approved a “master plan” that details potential park features once the facility, dubbed Pine Fork Park, is completed. A new option is now on the table for New Kent County supervisors to consider as a permanent home for Heritage Public Library — the empty building in the Maidstone development at New Kent Courthouse that once housed a Colonial Virginia Bank branch. Developer John Adamson, who purchased Maidstone in 2013, delivered a preliminary proposal for converting the 5,000 square-foot building into a library during supervisors’ Sept. 30 work session.
