One-to-one initiative launches in Charles City schools

Charles City parents will get an opportunity to participate in a technology session as part of the One-to-One technology initiative implemented by the local school system. On Sept. 12 and 13 at 630 p.m., parents will have the opportunity to learn and receive a hands-on experience using the technology. Families will learn more about the initiative and to understand the expectations for and use of the laptops. Charles City supervisors send message regarding future cycling events

Charles City supervisors are giving fair warning to any cycling organization that plans to use county roads for an event; make sure you go through the right channels. Tuesday night’s regular board meeting of the county leaders addressed that issue after a July triathlon caused frustration for many local residents and travelers (see related story on this website). Supervisors invited a representative from the Rev3 Triathlon to speak on the issue. Defendant pleads guilty to 19 charges in New Kent after technology tracks him down

Enhancements in technology have benefited a number of people, assisting them in areas such as work, school, and recreation. For one Newport News man, it led to 19 guilty pleas in New Kent Circuit Court Monday afternoon. Delmar Curtis Staton-Davies, 22, entered guilty pleas to 12 counts of credit card theft, three counts of grand larceny, three counts of misdemeanor tampering with a vehicle, and one count of credit card fraud as part of a plea agreement reached during court proceedings. New Kent excels in SOL testing; Charles City scores jump in 12 categories

Virginia’s Department of Education released SOL (Standards of Learning) test scores on Aug. 16 to the public with positive results and improvements for local schools. New Kent County Schools achieved a passing rate of 70 or more in all subject areas while Charles City County Schools improved in 12 areas as part of the totals released in the new data. New Kent scores continue to rank better than the state average, surpassing 20 of 29 areas of the state’s average. One dead, three seriously injured in Charles City accident near Benjamin Harrison Bridge

A Petersburg man has died as the result of a two-vehicle crash in Charles City last Saturday afternoon. Charles H. Moss, 64, was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident on Roxbury Road (Route 106) about one mile south of John Tyler Memorial Highway (Route 5) near the Benjamin Harrison Memorial Bridge. According to Virginia State Police spokesman Stephan Vick, a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser was traveling southbound on Roxbury Road when it ran off the right side of the road. Ruthville Road closure in Charles City among VDOT projects for Aug. 15-19

Virginia’s Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced projects for the upcoming week including a road closure in Charles City on Aug. 17. Ruthville Road (Route 612) will be closed between Courthouse Road (Route 155) and The Glebe Lane (Route 615) to traffic from 7:30 a.m.-8 p.m. for pipe replacement. Only residents who live on the road will be allowed to travel on it during that time and may be subject to delays or directed to an alternative route. Judge denies withdrawal of plea, sentences man to four years in prison

Prior to formal sentencing on Aug. 12 in Charles City Circuit Court, Curtis William Cole Jr., 43, voiced his concern on a charge of assault and battery of a family member (third offense) to Judge B. Elliott Bondurant, saying that it should be just an assault and battery charge. However, Bondurant rejected an attempt by the defendant to withdraw his plea after accepting plea deal and sentenced Cole to three years on the aforementioned charge plus a total of 16 months on eight misdemeanor charges of violating a protective order. Plea deals and renderings were handed down during Aug. 8 proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court: –John Glaseman Adams III, 42, of the 5500 block of Lakeview Road, Quinton, was found guilty on one count each of DUI while having a prior felony conviction, and felony driving revoked during a trial after the defendant pleaded not guilty. Adams was convicted of operating a vehicle on June 2, 2015 while he was intoxicated. Crash involving tractor-trailer results in at least one death

An accident on Interstate 64 eastbound at mile marker 217 in New Kent has resulted in at least one death. According to Sgt. Stephan M. Vick of the Virginia State Police, at 6:14 p.m. a 2009 Sterling tractor-trailer ran off the left side of the road and struck several trees. The vehicle subsequently overturned down an embankment. The driver of the tractor-trailer died at the scene. The passenger was ejected from the vehicle and was transported to a nearby medical facility by helicopter with serious injuries. Bridge repairs in New Kent, Charles City top VDOT projects

Repairs to bridges dominate Virginia’s Department of Transportation (VDOT) projects this upcoming week in Charles City and New Kent. –Aug. 1-4: The Benjamin Harrison Bridge connecting Charles City and Prince George will have alternating lane closures from 8 p.m.-6 a.m. as part of the elevator replacement project. Delays are expected. –Aug. 4: Interstate 64 eastbound at mile marker 223 from 12 a.m.-4 a.m. will have slow rolls lasting 15 minutes each for bridge repairs. –Aug. 5: Interstate 64 eastbound at mile marker 220 (West Point) from 12 a.m.-4 a.m. will have slow rolls lasting 15 minutes each for bridge repairs.
