SCC foregoes Chickahominy-Skiffes Creek power line
Virginia’s State Corporation Commission (SCC) has elected to bypass an alternative route for a 500,000-volt power line through eastern Charles City for another path through Surry County. The decision came in a Nov. 26 press release through the SCC media and website. After reviewing an application from Dominion Virginia Power to find alternative routes for power lines to provide electricity to the Hampton Roads area, the SCC recommended the Surry County-Skiffes Creek option instead of the Chickahominy-Skiffes Creek option that would have run through Charles City. Father and son burglary duo learn fates in CC Circuit Court
A father and son duo who burglarized multiple houses learned their respective fates during Nov. 22 Charles City Circuit Court proceedings. David Scott Yates Sr., 45, and David Scott Yates Jr., 22, both formerly of the 4500 block of Rockinghorse Lane, accepted responsibility for crimes each committed earlier in the year. Yates Jr. accepted a plea deal at an earlier Oct. 18 trial where he admitted guilt to one count of grand larceny. At that trial, the defendant admitted he stole copper from a Dominion Virginia Power substation on Chambers Road. Yates Jr. received a formal sentence of 10 years…

CC tackles controversial stormwater management
A controversial mandate from the state’s Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) that has plagued New Kent is now making its way into Charles City. Charles City supervisors got their first look at the local stormwater management program at its quarterly work session last night (Wednesday). Needless to say, the hour-long presentation did not appeal to board members. The plan focuses on development of land and how much it would cost for land disturbance in accordance to the proposed mandated regulations. NFPA program attended by NK Fire-Rescue, social services
New Kent County Fire-Rescue and department of social services participated in a training conference on fire and fall prevention sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The conference, entitled “Remembering WhenTM: A Fire and Fall Prevention Program for Older Adults”, was held December 1-3, in Boston, Mass. Teams were composed of one member of the fire department partnered with an individual from an agency within the community that serves older adults through home visits. ‘Anything Goes’ on New Kent High School stage Dec. 5-7
The fifth collaborative stage endeavor linking students at New Kent High School with those attending Kent, England’s Astor College for the Arts runs this Thursday through Saturday. Performances of the Cole Porter musical “Anything Goes” take place on the New Kent High School auditorium stage at 7 p.m. Thursday-Saturday (Dec. 5-7). Tickets are $5 for students with a valid ID and $7 in advance for adults. Adult tickets are $10 at the door. PF Parade to divert traffic on Dec. 8 Traffic on Route 60 in the area of Providence Forge will be diverted on Sunday, Dec. 8, for the annual Providence Forge Christmas Parade. Starting at 2 p.m., motorists are advised of the road closure. Route 155 (N. Courthouse Road) will be closed at Route 60, while traffic both east and westbound will be diverted to Boulevard Road. New Kent High School student collapses on bus, flown by helicopter to Richmond hospital
A New Kent High School student, identified only as a sophomore girl, collapsed this afternoon after boarding a school bus at the school. According to a source close to the matter, the girl became unresponsive and was not breathing after collapsing. A school resource officer administered CPR and a portable defibrillator (AED) was utilized until paramedics arrived on scene. The girl reportedly was stabilized and breathing on her own before being transported by medical evacuation helicopter to VCU Medical Center in Richmond. The girl’s name has not been released. No other details have been made available at this time.
Construction to detour traffic on Route 5 Dec. 4-5
Construction on the Virginia Capital Trail will cause delays on Route 5 (John Tyler Memorial Highway) on Dec. 4-5 to install beams for bridges along the trail. VDOT residency engineer Mike Cade said motorists can expect anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour delay as beams are unloaded from cranes to the bridge. Those cranes will occupy the entire highway as work is expected to occur betweeen 6:30 a.m.-3 p.m. on the aforementioned dates.
