Usually, a storybook ending tends to bring happiness and delight with a group of people living happily ever after. For the Chickahominy Indian Eastern Division (CIED) tribe, the journey along the way brought smiles to an organization that continues to grow through hard work and unity. Former store clerk indicted by New Kent Grand Jury
A former clerk at a local convenience store in New Kent has received seven indictments of embezzlement that resulted in more than $15,000 being stolen. Marleen Lewis Espada, 48, of 2406 Caddie Lane, Richmond, received the counts during New Kent Circuit Court grand jury proceedings on Monday. According to the indictments, while employed at Rick’s Local Deli, Espada allegedly stole money on seven different occasions between Jan. 1 and Jan. 30 of this year. In total, $16,305.63 was taken, with the largest amount confiscated at one point totaling $3,653.53. A minimum, of $775 was taken each time according to the…

Interstate to close in NK for test Virginia’s Interstate 64 emergency lane reversal plan will be tested later this month in the Richmond area. Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) says the eastbound lanes will be closed on July 21 from 4:30-7 a.m. between exit 205 (Bottoms Bridge/Quinton) and Exit 231 near Williamsburg. The New Kent rest area on eastbound I-64 also will be closed, along with the on and off ramps at exits 211 (Talleysville), 214 (Providence Forge), 220 (West Point), and 227 (Toano). Stalemate remains in school board move, truck stop CUP
New Kent’s Board of Supervisors’ June 26 work session yielded no movement on two issues expected to be voted on at its July regular meeting. Relocation of the school board office and the proposed Wilco-Hess LLC truck stop in Talleysville remained at a stalemate during updates at the meeting. Two members of the registrar’s office spoke to supervisors, citing legal issues about the possible relocation of the office. Bike race hit-and-run truck driver indicted in CC Court
A Virginia Beach truck driver has been identified and charged with felony hit and run and misdemeanor reckless driving resulting in injury to two bicyclists during a May 11 road race. Carlton Percell Crawford, 52, of 2107 Pier Point Place, received the indictments at Charles City Circuit Court during Tuesday morning proceedings. According to a police report, shortly after 11:30 a.m. on May 11, state police responded to the hit and run motor vehicle crash on Route 106, approximately one mile south of Old Union Road. Fire grant may bring regional training facility to New Kent
Summer weather brings dry ground and potential for fires in homes and forests. Now, New Kent fire chief Rick Opett’s proposal of a training facility may benefit the county and surrounding areas. Opett appeared before supervisors June 26 and received approval to apply for a Virginia Department of Fire Programs Burn Building Grant. The grant would provide funding for construction, labor, and design of a burn building that is used to train firefighter candidates. Myles Konrad Beverly, of 9410 Boulevard Road, Providence Forge, received the guilty verdict during June 24 proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court. Four suspects arrested in NK New Kent County Sheriff’s Office has arrested several individuals and charged them with multiple felony allegations: Roland David Grzymala II, 36, of 3390 Vaidens Ct., Lanexa, is charged with one count each of forcible sodomy, abduction, aggravated sexual battery, and carnal knowledge of a child under the age of 13. With recent occurrences in schools such as the incidents in Newtown, Conn. school safety concerns have escalated to an all-time high. Thanks to a grant approved by Gov.
