Sentence of 100 days given to jewelry thief in plea deal
A man will serve 100 days in jail after accepting a plea agreement during New Kent Circuit Court proceedings on June 10 after stealing jewelry from a New Kent residence. Corky Lee Hendricks, 32, of 703 Adams Road, Science Hill, Kentucky, pled guilty to one count of grand larceny and one count of breaking and entering into the home of Jeri-Douglas Thornton and Eric John Thornton on March 31 of last year. Supervisors defer truck stop decision, focus on schools
At the request of Wilco-Hess LLC, New Kent’s Board of Supervisors at its June 10 meeting deferred action on a conditional use permit (CUP) for the company’s proposed Route 106 truck stop. After a public hearing on May 13, supervisors elected to defer action while parties involved in the proposed developmental area rendered solutions to a possible increase in traffic. That meeting, consisting of representatives from Wilco-Hess, Pilot, Farms of New Kent, and MHF Dining, convened on May 23, yielding progress according to county administrator Rodney Hathaway. Alexys Gray posted a grade-point average of 4.5667 as valedictorian for New Kent High School’s Class of 2013. She was a member of the cross-country team, tennis team, Student Council Association, and BETA club. She plans to attend the University of Virginia. She is the daughter of Adam and Melissa Gray.

Cassandra Drain is salutatorian of New Kent High School’s Class of 2013 with a grade-point average of 4.3667 . She was a member of the tennis, quiz bowl, and forensics teams. She plans to attend West Virginia University. She is the daughter of Randall and Jo Drain.
Virginia Forestry Department warns of fireworks hazards
While legal fireworks and sparklers are a popular part of July 4 celebrations, in most areas of Virginia they can become a cause of wildfires. “One spark is all it would take for a wildfire to start,” said Fred Turck, assistant director for wildfire prevention and education with the Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF). “Fireworks that have finished burning are still extremely hot, and they can smolder in dry grass or leaves before a fire ignites.” Turck recommends keeping a bucket of water, wet towel and a fully-charged garden hose nearby. Fifty-one members of Charles City High School were encouraged to ‘be your authentic self’ during its celebration on May 24. Anxious graduates received an outgoing message from Evelyn Miles Giebel, a retired educator and a 1965 graduate of Ruthville High School during commencement ceremonies. “Remember when you have a choice in life, always choose kindness over cruelty,” said the former Charles City alum. “Try to be your authentic self.
