NK supervisors approve tax increase, budget for FY13-14

New Kent’s Historic School will benefit from half of a four-cent real estate tax increase as supervisors approved their FY 2013-14 budget on May 29. After an hour of deliberations, supervisors unanimously approved $66,494,241 for the next fiscal year. A tax levy increasing real estate from 81 cents to 85 cents per $100 of assessed value passed 4-1, with District 4 representative Ron Stiers casting the lone dissenting vote. Two cents of the increase are specifically designated for renovations of the Historic School. Unprofessionalism comment appalls CC supervisors

At least two members of Charles City’s Board of Supervisors expressed displeasure in regards to comments made at an April 30 work session by Charles City School Board administration and members. During board directives at its May 28 meeting, supervisors’ chairman Floyd Miles Sr. and District 2 representative Bill Coada addressed statements made by schools’ interim finance director David Papenfuse. Additional funding accepted as NK schools adopt budget

New Kent’s School Board adopted its budget for the 2013-14 school year at its regular meeting Monday night. After New Kent’s Board of Supervisors added an additional $100,000 in local funds (see related story in this issue), school board members approved the $28,464,244 budget. Of that amount, $12.5 million are local dollars. In other matters, school board officials and representatives of New Kent band boosters hope to put aside issues and move ahead with supporting the program. A high school graduation is often recognized as a time of celebration with family, friends, and supporters for a person who has completed the 13 year journey. But in Charles City, parents and friends of some graduates saw the seemingly joyous event soured thanks to a dress code policy. Parties interested in a conditional use permit (CUP) submitted by Wilco Hess LLC for the construction of a travel plaza met May 23 to discuss the structural integrity of the Route 106/Exit 211 interchange.
