John Joseph “Joe” McLaughlin Jr. has announced his candidacy for re-election to the position of sheriff in New Kent County. “I am humbled by the support that I have received throughout this great community,” McLaughlin said in a press release. “We have been blessed to have such caring and supportive citizens and businesses, as those we serve in New Kent.”
Jayson Crawley will vie for the position of sheriff of Charles City County. Crawley, who currently is employed by Surry County Sheriff’s Office, has also served as a deputy and captain for Charles City County Sheriff’s Office. “I feel that my 21 years of experience in law enforcement and 30 years in public safety will provide me with the necessary tools to be a down to earth professional sheriff,” Crawley said in a press release. “I will ensure that my office is firm, fair, and consistent to all citizens of the county, as well as those who travel through.”
T. Scott Renick has announced his candidacy for the position of Commonwealth’s Attorney in New Kent County. Renick graduated from the University of Richmond School of Law in 1991 and has operated his law firm since 1997. Renick has practiced law throughout Virginia but has focused primarily on New Kent County. “I believe in the Rule of Law and I love our county,” Renick said in a press release. “I have been actively involved in the county and I will do my best to represent New Kent as your Commonwealth’s Attorney.”
Javier Smith has announced his intentions to pursue the position of sheriff for Charles City County. Smith, who served as the county’s sheriff for eight years, has 22 years in law enforcement and currently works in Chesterfield. “As a candidate, I am excited to speak on the duties necessary to move the office forward,” Smith said in a press release. “The experience gained through working as a deputy, an administrator, and now part of an accredited office, has given me the knowledge and confidence to better serve our community.”
A May 9 public hearing on Charles City’s budget for FY2019-20 also came with a lot of changes from the first rendition of the $22 million figure. Amendments to the proposed budget saw three CIP projects postponed. The wastewater plant at the Government Administration Building ($349,250), renovation of the courtroom that is currently home to Heritage Public Library ($100,000), and clerk office security ($25,400) have been tabled as future projects, amounting to a savings of $474,650. A Williamsburg man received two indictments related to sex crimes Tuesday morning in Charles City Circuit Court. Raheem Lucky Pittman, 21, of the 100 block of Merrimac Trail, was indicted by a Charles City grand jury on one count each of rape and sexual penetration with an object. The offenses stemmed from a Nov. 21, 2018 incident. Pittman’s trial is tentatively scheduled for May 24.
A Toano man will spend the next six months in jail after accepting a plea deal to driving under the influence for the third time within five years. Nicholas Maday, 33, of the 300 block of Racefield Drive, entered the guilty plea as part of Monday morning proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court.
