Barhamsville man cleared of unauthorized use of vehicle charge

A charge of unauthorized use of a vehicle lodged against a Barhamsville was dismissed after a Monday morning proceeding in New Kent Circuit Court. Bryan Matthew Crow, 35, of the 5800 block of Farmers Drive, was found not guilty on the one charge after the contested trial. On June 21, Holly Gwyn, who was in a relationship with Crow, woke up around 5:30 a.m. to find her phone and purse. Man accepts last minute plea deal in New Kent Circuit Court

A Portsmouth man accepted a plea deal just prior to what was scheduled to be a contested trial during Monday afternoon proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court. Noah Edwin Riddick, 34, of the 3400 block of George Washington Highway, entered guilty pleas to two counts of assault and battery on a family member (third offense), two counts of misdemeanor violation of a protective order, and one charge of strangulation. Proposed solar facility in Charles City clears first hurdle

As the trend of renewable energy continues to grow, one company has requested a special use permit to construct a facility in Charles City to harness solar energy. Charles City’s Planning Commission issued a favorable vote of 5-1-1 to forward to the board of supervisors a permit for Keydet Solar Project. Daniel Menaham, the senior manager of project development for sPower, presented a presentation to commissioners and more than 50 members of the public of the proposed 340-megawatt solar energy facility. The Benjamin Harrison Bridge that connects Charles City and Prince George County will be closing overnight on Oct. 28 and Oct. 29 for bridge work (weather permitting). Charles City leaders approve Route 106 master plan

Charles City supervisors unanimously approved the adoption of a plan to revamp the Route 106 (Roxbury) corridor. Assistant Zoning Administrator Myles Busching presented an abbreviated overview of the master plan at Tuesday night’s board meeting. A keen observation by a New Kent deputy during a routine patrol proved instrumental in finding a Hampton man guilty of grand larceny. Marvin Jamaal Banks, 42, of the 100 block of San Barbara Drive, was found guilty on the one charge during a Monday afternoon trial in New Kent Circuit Court. One charge of burglary and misdemeanor pretrial violation are being reserved by Judge B. What started out as a joyride for a defendant ended up as a guilty conviction after a contested trial Monday afternoon in New Kent Circuit Court. Tornado touches down in Lanexa; Tropical Storm Michael damages New Kent, Charles City

A tornado spawned in the Lanexa area of New Kent was the result of Hurricane/Tropical Storm Michael on Oct. 11. The National Weather Service determined Friday afternoon that an EF0 tornado, capable of wind speeds reaching between 65-85 miles per hour, touched down near Colony Trail causing massive damage to the area. The tornado was one of seven that touched down according to the National Weather Service. The tornado warning went out early Thursday morning to most of Virginia localities, including New Kent and Charles City. Superintendents of schools closed schools early while businesses boarded up.
