New Kent’s Lady Trojans entertained visiting Colonial Heights in a Tuesday night home field hockey contest. And similar to the score they would put up in the victory, it matched their overall record in the win. New Lady Trojan field hockey coach Cristen Sickal entered her new role in an Aug. 29 home opening contest hosted by New Kent as the visiting Monticello Lady Mustangs entered the Ed Allen Complex. Needless to say, Sickal’s debut featured all the dramatics possible for her Lady Trojans. After 60 minutes of regulation and an overtime period that resulted in a 2-2 tie, it was the hosts winning a 3-0 shootout to defeat Monticello in the contest. In high school sports, results usually matter on the scoreboard when a contest is over. However, in some rare cases, it’s about the progress of the situation. Such was the cause during an Aug. 28 volleyball home opener for the Charles City Lady Panthers. Fall 2018 saw difficulties faced by Charles City High School’s athletics’ programs. With a lack of student interest, football and volleyball were cancelled for the year as questions arose about if both programs would return in 2019. The answer came Saturday morning. After leading the Capital City Go-Go to a 25-25 record in its inaugural season, New Kent native Jarell Christian has been elevated to the position of assistant coach for the Washington Wizards. The announcement came as part of an Aug. 1 press release from the organization.
