A Saturday night contest between New Kent’s Lady Trojans and Charles City Lady Panthers saw a modest crowd fill the gymnasium. What those in attendance didn’t expect was to see how the visiting Lady Trojans dominated from behind the arc. New Kent drained 10 three-pointers, scoring more points with the long-distance connections than Charles City totaled in the contest as the Lady Trojans coasted to a 65-27 win. Haley Hyndshaw’s corner three began the onslaught of trifectas for New Kent as the visitors quickly jumped ahead 6-0 over Charles City. After Alexis Williams’ converted a floater to get the Lady…

In battle of runs, Mathews uses final one to upend Charles City

By Andre Jones | December 7, 2018 10:36 pm

In a game of ping pong, fast-paced action back-and-forth eventually leads to one person having momentum before their opponent takes back that control. In Friday night’s basketball contest between Charles City and Mathews, it was the visitors who capitalized from the final swing to take the win. Closing out the game on a 17-3 run, Mathews used the final run to defeat Charles City 83-69 in the Tidewater District opener for both teams. In the early stages of the contest, the Panthers opened the game with a run. Kameron Johnson’s free throws along with Christian Stewart’s lay-up gave the hosts…

The Lady Eagles strung together the first six baskets in the paint to jump out early on New Kent. However, Lady Trojan Bailee Hellebrant’s three-pointer brought the team within three (12-9) midway through the opening frame. But the visitors put together a 9-4 run to close the first quarter to take a…

Second chance opportunities antagonize Charles City’s bid for win

By Andre Jones | December 5, 2018 10:20 pm

Charles City’s Panthers didn’t have a problem stopping the visiting Colonial Beach Drifters on their initial shot attempt in the Dec. 5 non-district basketball contest. The problem for the Panthers was allowing for multiple opportunities at the basket. Colonial Beach dominated the offensive glass, leading to easy baskets en route to a 70-48 thrashing of Charles City in the Panthers’ home opener. Charles City’s only lead of the night came in the early stages of the contest with Tanner Grubbs’ conventional three-point play to put the hosts up 5-2. But the Drifters methodical offense and second chances orchestrated an 8-0…

Hellebrant’s hot hand lifts Lady Trojans to win in home opener

By Robb Johnson | November 30, 2018 9:57 am

New Kent’s Lady Trojans home opener faired a lot better than their first contest, thanks to a breakout performance from Bailee Hellebrant. Hellebrant scored 19 points including a barrage of three-pointers to guide the Lady Trojans to a 44-28 triumph over the visiting Bruton Lady Panthers during the Nov. 29 clash. Early on in the contest, Lady Trojan head coach Neko Burson tried to figure out a defense to slow down Bruton’s Jade Robinson, who scored 23 points in the previous contest. A tactic of a box-and-one failed to yield any positive results, but a switch to a 1-3-1 defense…

New Kent’s Trojans opened its basketball season on Nov. 28 against Bay Rivers District foe Tabb Tigers looking to have a more successful season than last year’s 4-20 campaign.
