Growing up and graduating as classmates as part of New Kent High School’s Class of 2010, Lady Trojan head coach Maria Bates and Maury Lady Commodores head coach Nikki Jones friendship bloomed in the classroom and on the athletic field. New Kent’s Kyle Coles, Michael Gatling, and the boys’ 4×400 meter relay team emerged as event winners to lead the host Trojans to a team title at the 6th annual “Shoot the Gun and Run” Invitational at New Kent High School on Mar. 17. The Trojans scored 126.16 points to claim the team championship, outdistancing Bay Rivers foe Lafayette who finished as runner-up with 84 and J.R. Tucker’s 60, placing them in third. Sometimes the best way to bounce back from a tough loss is with a statement performance. Apparently New Kent’s Lamont Brandon got that message loud and clear. Brandon accounted for seven RBIs as the Trojans trounced Bruton 22-2 in the Bay Rivers opening contest for both squads Friday afternoon.
