New Kent High School is now looking for a new head football coach to lead the program into the 2018-19 season. After three years at the helm, former head coach Clark Harrell has accepted a position at Riverbend High School. Harrell took over the New Kent program after leaving Smithfield. He led the Trojans to a 10-20 record over three seasons. The ten wins are equal to the number of victories the team earned in the seven years prior to his arrival.
Similar to what had been the story of Charles City’s Panthers’ hoops season, an encounter with Middlesex’s Chargers on Feb. 8 presented a “pick your poison” scenario. The invading Chargers placed six players in double figures as they defeated Charles City 78-64 in a contest where the score was closer than the actual play of the game. Charles City’s only lead of the night came on Kameron Johnson’s three-pointer early in the game (3-2). But from there, the visitors exploited mismatches in Charles City’s defenses. First, it was Charger big man Jaden Reed scoring six of his team’s next eight…

Charles City’s Lady Panthers searched for every way possible to garner a win in a Feb. 8 matchup with Middlesex’s Lady Chargers. Unfortunately for the hosts, a lack of experience and inability to put the ball in the hoop echoed what has been a dismal year for the Lady Panthers. The Lady Chargers had no problem trouncing Charles City 66-27 in the home finale in the Tidewater District contest. Early on, Lady Panther Cheyenne Marshall’s putback knotted the game at two apiece. But that would be the only true threat Charles City posed to Middlesex. The visitors Lyndsay Greene scored…

New Kent’s Lady Trojans needed to play near perfect basketball against a Warhill Lady Lions team that needed a win. However, miscues and inadequate shooting made for a disappointing home finale for the hosts. New Kent committed 20 turnovers and only sank four of 12 free throws as they fell 37-28 in the Feb. 7 season finale against Warhill. Warhill broke a 2-2 tie early on Te’Daizhua Jones three-pointer and an Alyssa Brungot jumper to spurt a 9-4 run, resulting in a 12-7 advantage after the first quarter. The Lady Trojans had ample opportunities to cut the lead with trips…

After being throttled the night before, New Kent’s Trojans looked to bounce back after an unfathomable performance against Poquoson. They got that sour taste out their mouth Tuesday night. Despite questionable officiating and a buzzer beater to force overtime, the Trojans persevered with an 80-75 victory over the York Falcons to cap off a successful Senior Night. York opened the contest early behind Jesse Kimrey’s three-pointer. From there, each team exchanged scores in back-and-forth action, with the visitors emerging with a 14-12 lead to end the first quarter. After the Falcons’ advantage opened to eight (29-21), New Kent began to…

They say adversity builds character and that character is developed in the most difficult times. On Feb. 5, New Kent’s Trojans realized that it will take a lot of character to bounce back after an encounter with Poquoson. The visiting Islanders unlashed a 40-point beatdown of New Kent, holding the hosts to a mere 13 points in a 53-13 shellacking in Monday night’s Bay Rivers contest. New Kent passed the ball around trying to wear down Poquoson on the defensive end to start the contest. However, a missed three-point attempt allowed the Islanders to rebound and push the ball down…
