New Kent had ample opportunities for scores, forcing Smithfield into four first half turnovers during Oct. 20 homecoming contest. But the host Trojans only mustered seven points from Smithfield’s miscues. Meanwhile, the visiting Packers used a methodical offense to spoil New Kent’s homecoming night with a 28-7 beatdown of the Trojans. New Kent’s Lady Trojans used strong serving and aces to complete a straight set sweep 25-13, 25-10, 25-17 of the visiting Smithfield Lady Packers during the Oct. 19 volleyball matchup. Charles City’s Lady Panthers made great strides during their Oct. 19 Senior Night against Middlesex. New Kent’s Trojans faced a major road test as they hoped to make Friday, Oct. 13 a superstitious day for the home-standing Lafayette Rams. Man makes two hole-in-ones in New Kent

A Maryland man sank two hole-in-ones in the same round at Royal New Kent Golf Club. Jim Smith accomplished the feat on Sept. 29, a rarity to do by golf standards. On the third hole, he used an eight-iron to find the bottom of the cup from 145 yards out. On the 12th hole, a pitching wedge was used as he once again scored a hole-in-one from 120 yards.

New Kent golf places third at Group 3A championships

New Kent High School’s golf team posted a two-round combined score of 678, finishing in third place at the Group 3A State Golf championships on Oct. 10-11 at Glenrochie Country Club. Robb Kinder finished in a tie for third place, posting a cumulative score of 150 at the event. New Kent’s girls and boys’ cross-country team both finished second, respectively, during an Oct. 4 home meet. New Kent girls’ finished behind Tabb’s Tigers who won the event. York completed the meet in third place while Lafayette ended in fourth. Jackie Clardy-Joseph paced the Lady Trojans, finishing second overall with a time of 21:06.
