It’s rare when New Kent Lady Trojans come into a contest as the favorite. That’s what happened Tuesday night when they welcomed the visiting Grafton Lady Clippers on Dec. 12. But records mean nothing on the hardwood as Grafton earned its second win of the season, downing New Kent 47-34 in the Bay Rivers District clash. After suffering a season opening loss at Southampton, Charles City looked to extract a measure of revenge. For one half, it looked like the hosts Panthers were going to do that. But a switch in defenses by the visiting Indians resulted in Charles City being outscored 57-22 in the second half as Southampton rolled to a 101-55 thumping in the Dec. 11 contest. Charles City’s Lady Panthers continue to experience growing pains. This time, it was from too much aggression. The visiting Southampton Lady Indians attempted 29 first half free throws, enabling them to outdistance themselves from the home-standing Lady Panthers 52-19 in Monday night’s non-district clash. Charles City’s Lady Panthers found some offensive continuity in the second half of a Dec. 7 matchup against the visiting Lancaster Lady Red Devils. LaPrade named ACC wrestler of the week
B.C. LaPrade, a 2015 graduate of New Kent High School and standout wrestler, was named the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) wrestler of the week for Nov. 14-21. LaPrade, wrestling at 157 pounds for Virginia Tech, scored a decision victory over Dylan Forzani from the University of Chattanooga and followed that with an victory over Central Michigan’s Colin Heffernan, who was ranked 13th in the country. LaPrade completed his high school career as a two-time Group 3A state champion, winning in the 138-pound and 145-pound weight divisions.
