Warhill scores early, upends New Kent on Senior Night
New Kent’s Lady Trojans home finale against the visiting Warhill Lady Lions didn’t go as planned. A solo goal within the opening moments of the contest was more than enough as Warhill defeated New Kent 4-0 during the Oct. 9 Senior Night contest. The visitors wasted little time getting on the board, as Peaches Branscome found the back of the goal less than three minutes in. Homecoming night is one to celebrate and to bring back alumni from a number of different generations. For Charles City’s football Panthers, it only resulted in mounted frustrations and penalties. After falling to Bruton in an early season encounter, New Kent’s Lady Trojans looked to reverse its fortunes during an Oct. 3 home matchup. For the hosts, taking advantage of errors by the visiting Lady Panthers proved as a key point. New Kent dropped Bruton 28-26, 25-20, 13-25, and 25-22 in the hard fought for set affair. Charles City’s Lady Panthers’ volleyball team continues to grow from earlier contest. But with only six players dressed, the hosts failed to muster a good start in an Oct. 3 contest. Charles City fell in straight sets 5-25, 6-25, 8-25 to visiting West Point, keeping them winless (0-5) for the year. From the sideline, Lady Panther head coach Racene Otey urged her team to communicate against the opposition. But with only echoes heard in the gym, the host dropped the opening frame 5-25. Smithfield ramps up pressure, goals defeat Lady Trojans 3-1
New Kent’s Lady Trojans field hockey team came into the Oct. 2 contest knowing they would have to play a near perfect game to defeat the invading Smithfield Lady Packers. Unfortunately, goaltending woes and bad offense played into a 3-1 loss to their Bay Rivers’ opponent. Less than two minutes into the contest, a penalty corner by Smithfield’s Libby Darden provided the guests a 1-0 advantage. Karma can be both positive and negative when applied in the right situation. And after informing referees on an errant goal call, the Lady Trojans saw the good gesture come back in the end. After two scoreless halves and one 15-minute overtime period, New Kent’s Lady Trojans field hockey team edged Colonial Heights 1-0 during a sudden death penalty stroke period on Sept. 28. Trojans’ golf team claims third straight regional championship
New Kent High School’s golf team posted a score of 311 on its way to winning its third consecutive regional golf title. The Trojans easily outdistanced runner-up Park View (339) and Bay Rivers District Rival (352) who finished in third to win the 3A Regional golf tournament at Dogwood Trace Golf Course in Petersburg. Robb Kinder posted a score of 71, earning top medalist at the regional event as the event’s top golfer. New Kent Parks and Recreation hosted a football skills competition on Sept. 8 for young athletes. Kids were able to demonstrate their skills in punting, passing, and kicking the ball. Charles City’s Panthers returned home for the first time in a month looking to duplicate their previous feat in Leon C. Miles Memorial Stadium and come out with a win.
