New Kent girls place 7th in 3A state swimming, diving

Led by Lexi Mills’ diving win and Julianna Jones’ runner-up finishes in two events, New Kent’s Lady Trojans placed seventh overall with 155 points in the state 3A swimming and diving championships that concluded Saturday in Richmond. Mills won the one-meter diving title while Jones took second in both the 100 and 200 freestyle events with respective times of 52.0 and 1:52.84. Zorey Sargent finished third in the 200 individual medley (2:10.59) and sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.17). Darber defends title, Ragland also prevails at 3A state wrestling

New Kent’s Caden Darber successfully defended his 132-pound title while teammate Trent Ragland prevailed at 220 pounds in the 3A state wrestling championships held Friday and Saturday in Salem. New Kent placed ninth overall with 70 points, 24 apiece coming by way of Darber and Ragland. Christiansburg dominated the competition to win with 204. Darber (37-6) won by 6-4 decision over Christianburg’s Marshall Keller in the 132-pound title match. New Kent dominates in pole vault at 3A East Region indoor track meet

New Kent’s Griffin Kowal cleared a meet record 15 feet, 3 inches in pole vault as the Trojans placed four in the event on the way to a fifth place finish in the 3A East Region indoor track championships held Feb. 15 in Hampton. Darius Jones cleared 12 feet to take second followed by Will Tolley in fourth (10-6) while Jack Daniels tied for fifth (9-6). Overall, the Trojans totaled 46.5 points for fifth place. New Kent’s Mills wins state 3A diving championship

New Kent sophomore Alexa “Lexi” Mills won the state diving title during the Virginia 3A swimming and diving championships held Thursday night in Richmond. Mills is New Kent’s first athlete to compete in diving. She adds the 3A state title to her recent championships on the Conference 25 and 3A East Region levels.

New Kent blows 20-0 lead, falls 54-51 to Colonial Heights in Conference 25 semis

Seven minutes into their Conference 25 basketball semifinal with Colonial Heights, New Kent’s host Trojans owned a 20-0 lead. Unfortunately, it would take just over 20 minutes for the Trojans to net their next 20 points. In between, the Colonials gradually erased New Kent’s seemingly comfortable margin, bypassing the Trojans late in the third quarter. Trailing for all of the final quarter, the Trojans’ last ditch bid to force overtime came up short, enabling the Colonials to escape with a 54-51 Thursday win along with trip to the conference final as well as next week’s region tourney. What Lafayette’s Rams lacked in shooting accuracy from the floor, they offset with nearly perfect precision from the free throw line. They used that touch over three quarters to separate themselves from New Kent’s host Lady Trojans before pulling away for a 46-21 basketball triumph.
