New Kent defense helps overcome turnovers, penalties in toppling Charles City 27-6 in benefit game

Friday night’s benefit game pitting crosstown rivals Charles City and New Kent couldn’t have presented a better list of elements of a real contest; a sunny day that turned into a rainfall, a big play to shift momentum, and fans on both sides cheering on their squads. In the end, it was the homestanding Trojans who emerged on top. Powered by two touchdowns in both the opening and closing quarters, New Kent toppled Charles City 27-6 during the Aug. 19 affair at the historic high school field. Vaulting to success again

FMA students compete at AAU National Tournament

Members of Freedom Martial Arts, located in New Kent, competed in the AAU National Tae Kwon Do tournament during the July 4 holiday weekend. Four members of the team took to the mat in a variety of divisions at the tournament in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Olivia Altizer, 13, began the competition for Freedom Martial Arts. Despite suffering a torn ACL during the opening match, she finished all three 90-second rounds prior to the event being called by the referee. Carpenter named to 3A First Team in baseball

Steven Carpenter, a recent graduate of New Kent High School, was named to the Group 3A all-state baseball team. Carpenter received recognition and was elected to the first team as a shortstop. He will be continuing his baseball career at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Kowal claims outdoor pole vault title at 3A state championships

New Kent’s Griffin Kowal duplicated his indoor pole vault success with a clearance of 15’0” to win the Group 3A Outdoor Track & Field championships on June 3-4 at Harrisonsburg High School. Kowal’s mark set a new state record for Group 3A in its third year of existence. Teammates Darius Jones (11’0”) and Will Tolley (10’6”) finished eighth and 14th, respectively, in the event. Trojan distance runner Andrew Carlin earned a place on the medal stand, running a personal best 9:34.90 in the boys’ 3200-meter run to place third.
