Second half performance propels New Kent to 84-51 victory over West Point

New Kent’s Trojans dominated in the second half, outscoring West Point’s visiting Pointers 47-26 on the way to an 84-51 basketball triumph. Saturday night’s clash turned into a rough and tumble affair marred by 60 personal fouls. Neither team, however, fared well from the free throw line. Of a combined 90 free throws launched, only 42 found the bottom of the net. Cold shooting, turnovers thwart New Kent bid to hold lead, Tabb prevails 71-58

Midway through the third quarter, New Kent’s host Trojans staged an 11-0 run and sank five of six free throws awarded for three Tabb technical fouls (two leading to ejection of Tiger head coach Doug Baggett) to mount a 46-34 advantage over the visitors. Game over, right? Wrong. The Tigers roared back with 18 unanswered points, using their quickness to pull away for a 71-58 Friday night basketball win and hand New Kent (1-1) its first loss of the young season. Allen garners first team conference, region collegiate volleyball honors

Karley Allen, a former New Kent standout and current women’s volleyball player at UVA-Wise, has repeated as a first team selection to the All-Mountain East Conference team. Allen, a junior, registered 535 kills, 1,549 total attacks, 43 aces, and 495 digs for the season. Her average of 4.31 kills per set rates her fourth nationally in NCAA Division II, while her 12.49 attacks per set rates her seventh. She also became the first UVA-Wise player to reach the 1,000 career mark in both digs and kills on Oct. 24. Allen was also named to the NCAA Division II Conference Commissioner’s…

Panthers run out of gas, fall 71-57 to Southampton in home opener

Behind 11 third quarter points from reserve guard Conner Robbins, Charles City’s Panthers found themselves down by a single basket at the 3:30 mark against the invading Southampton Indians. But the transition into the fourth quarter saw the visitors orchestrate a 10-0 run and the Panthers could not respond as they fell 71-57 in the Dec. 3 basketball home opener. Running their flex offense to perfection, New Kent’s Trojans built a comfortable first half lead at the expense of York’s invading Falcons. The hosts then withstood a York comeback after intermission to go on to a 67-48 victory in Wednesday night’s basketball opener for both. Five minutes in, the Trojans reached a double-digit lead (16-6). Several New Kent High School athletes have won Colonial Rivers Conference 25 All-Conference honors in football, volleyball, and field hockey, including four student/athletes who have earned first team distinction. Senior running back Davion Barnes and freshman defensive back C.J. Reeders have been named first team in football. Winning second team honors are senior wide receiver R.J. Morris, junior linebacker Hunter Pitts, and sophomore defensive lineman Trent Ragland. Receiving honorable mention are senior offensive guards Josh Dixon and Joe Dixon.
