For his birthday, coach Barry Rountree received the best present from his New Kent Lady Trojan soccer team — a victory in his first game at the helm. But arriving at the outcome had its tense moments. New Kent built a 4-1 first half lead over West Point’s visiting Lady Pointers in Monday night’s season opener, seemingly on the way to a rout. Annual basketball tournament raises money for New Kent Educational Foundation, West Point Rotary

New Kent Education Foundation and West Point Rotary held their fifth annual three-on-three basketball tournament at New Kent High School to raise money for both groups on March 7. Money raised through this year’s event benefits New Kent Public Schools and the West Point YMCA. Twelve adult basketball teams competed in two age brackets. In the 30 and over group, Davis Produce vanquished Team Womack by a score of 40-24 to claim the first place trophy. New Kent basketball players earn All-Conference 25 honors

Two New Kent High basketball players have won spots on the All-Colonial Rivers Conference 25 team while another pair of Trojans received honorable mention. Senior forward/guard Trey Cox has been named to the first team while sophomore point guard Kyle Claytor earned a second team nod in recent voting. Senior forwards Ryan Lugg and Jason Whitlow received honorable mention.

Former New Kent wrestlers advance to national collegiate tournament

Two former New Kent wrestlers are still making a name for themselves at the college level. Evan Canady, a senior at Liberty University, and Trey Gregory, a junior at James Madison University, both were champions this past weekend at the National Collegiate Wrestling Assosciation Mid-Atlantic Conference tournament. They now advance to the national tournament in Allen, Texas on March 12-14. Canady, wrestling in the 235-pound weight class, also received the award for most pins (4) this past weekend. Gregory, wrestling in the 157-pound weight class, serves as president of the JMU wrestling club.

Poor shooting, rebounding ousts Charles City from conference tournament

Inability to sink shots and grab rebounds proved to be Charles City’s undoing in the host Panthers’ quest to advance in the Conference 42 basketball tournament. King & Queen’s visiting Tigers used an advantage on the boards coupled with Charles City’s inaccuracy from the floor to post a 57-33 victory and end the Panthers’ season in Tuesday night’s opening round. While most would consider “slow sledding” to be a horrible pun after eight inches of snowfall, it was just that for the Charles City Lady Panthers in a Conference 42 first round contest against the visiting King & Queen Lady Tigers. Despite a sluggish start, Charles City used pressure tactics to upend the visiting Lady Tigers 46-38 during the Feb. 24 contest to advance to the Conference 42 semifinals.
