Jones wins 200-meter freestyle at Group 3A state meet

New Kent’s Julianna Jones won the girls 200-meter freestyle at the Group 3A championships on Feb. 20 at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. Jones swam a time of 1:52.46 in the event, helping the Lady Trojans to a 14th place finish overall at the meet. Josh Bell’s seventh place finish in the 50-meter freestyle and partnering up with teammates Ethan Ruhl, Chase Ladd, and John Lloyd for an eighth-place finish in the boys 200-meter freestyle relay propelled the Trojans to a 14th place finish overall in the boys’ division for New Kent.

LaPrade, Sanders win titles as New Kent finishes fifth at state championships

New Kent’s B.C. LaPrade and Cade Sanders garnered state championship victories as the Trojans finished in fifth place at the Group 3A State Wrestling Championships on Feb. 20. LaPrade has no trouble topping David Giantonio of Christiansburg in a 22-10 decision, earning a title at the 145-pound weight class. LaPrade won last year’s state title in the 138-pound division. Sanders defeated Nick Giantonio of Christiansburg in the 160-pound finals, winning with a 5-3 decision. Five years ago to the day, New Kent won its first regional wrestling crown, beginning a string of three consecutive region championships. Today, Trojan wrestlers tacked on number four. Only up by two on senior night and hosting rival New Kent, Charles City’s Lady Panthers searched for one more push from top scorers Adrienne Miles and Hailey Holmes to close out the regular season. Charles City’s Panthers held an early lead in their season finale clash at West Point during a Feb. 10 contest. Unfortunately for the visiting Panthers, miscues paired with a Pointer scoring run doomed any hopes of an upset. West Point’s Pointers strung together a 16-3 run to close the first quarter as the hosts cruised to a 69-40 victory. Charles City emerged as leaders early into the contest. Opportunity to take the lead came knocking at the door for New Kent’s Lady Trojans, locked in a close basketball contest with Bruton’s visiting Panthers. Inability to sink shots at crucial times, however, meant the door went unanswered. The Lady Trojans created a 14-14 tie near the midpoint of the second quarter and were within two at 18-16 as the first half wound down. New Kent wrestlers win six weight classes, cruise to Conference 25 championship

Qualifying wrestlers for the finals in 12 of 14 weight classes placed New Kent’s Trojans well on their way to winning their first Colonial 3A Conference 25 wrestling title. The Trojans led Poquoson’s defending champ Islanders, who placed nine wrestlers in the finals, by 32 points heading into Saturday’s championship round at New Kent. Unleashing a furious press, New Kent’s host Trojans outscored Lafayette’s Rams 31-17 in the final quarter of their Friday night basketball battle.
