Charles City Lady Panthers failed to overcome a 10-0 early deficit, eventually falling to the visiting Lady Cougars of Surry County 13-6. After leading 1-0 after one inning, Surry begin to stretch the lead out, pushing four more runs across the plate. The Lady Panthers, on the other hand, struggled to make contact at the plate, mostly in part to stellar pitching from Lady Cougar pitcher Kennedy Presson who struck out nine Lady Panthers in the first three innings of play. Fourth frame dreadful for Panthers as Surry cruises 22-2

Charles City’s Panther baseball team was up to the task of staying competitive with Surry County’s visiting Cougars. Unfortunately for the hosts, the top of the fourth inning seemed like a never-ending cycle of scoring for the visitors. Clark Harrell, hired last week as New Kent High School’s head football coach, comes in with a reputation for turning around programs that have fallen on hard times. And New Kent is a classic example. Barber starts softball career hot at Maggie Walker’s Governor School

Abigail Barber, a New Kent resident who is continuing her high school studies at Maggie Walker’s Governor School, began her softball career with a successful week for the Lady Dragons. Barber batted four of six at the plate, including two home runs in two games. She also added three RBIs, four runs scored, and stole four bases. The Lady Dragons are part of the Colonial District.

New Kent’s Griffin Kowal set a new meet record in pole vault while teammate Andrew Carlin won two events to lead the host Trojans to first place in Saturday’s annual Shoot the Gun & Run invitational track meet. New Kent amassed 128 points, 22 ahead of runner-up James Monroe’s 106. Cumberland finished third with 98 in the 12-school competition followed closely by Warhill’s 97. New Kent’s Lady Trojans built a 3-0 lead through four innings before turning back Jamestown rally attempts in two of the three finals frames to secure a 4-1 victory over the visiting Eagles. Shaking off the effects of illness, New Kent’s Sydney Griffith also shook off defenders long enough to launch a long-range shot late in the Lady Trojans’ soccer match with invading Colonial Heights.
