Shrugging off serious second half foul problems, New Kent’s host Trojans staged a crucial third quarter run, turned back a fourth quarter West Point rally, and closed out a 79-69 basketball triumph over the Pointers with free throws down the stretch. Wednesday night’s outcome completed a sweep of the season series with the Pointers and raised New Kent’s record to 5-9. New Kent’s Lady Trojans had a golden opportunity to erase the zero on the win side of their record Thursday night when they entertained Jamestown Eagles, a team that entered with one win as well as being bogged down in a nine-game losing streak. Head coaches for both New Kent’s Trojans and Charles City’s Panthers pointed to their respective teams’ “Achilles heel” following Saturday night’s basketball battle. On three separate occasions in the third quarter during a Jan. 9 contest against the visiting Middlesex Chargers, Charles City’s Panthers were a mere basket from tying the game up.
