With 34 seconds left in regulation and overtime looming if Bruton made good on a two-point conversion, New Kent’s defense rose to the occasion. The host Trojans stuffed the Panthers’ bid to extend Friday night’s football encounter to preserve a 28-26 victory in an error-plagued contest during which each team capitalized on the opponent’s miscues. Lackluster performance leads Mathews’ upset of Panthers
Halloween traditions usually call for kids going door to door, saying “trick or treat” and either receiving candy or having a trick played on them. For Charles City’s Panthers, it was no treat in Friday night’s home season finale. Mathews Blue Devils, who entered the contest with a 0-8 record, stunned the hosts Panthers 28-21 during the Oct. 31 contest and ruining senior night festivities. New Kent’s Carlin second overall in Conference 25 cross-country
Andrew Carlin finished second overall to help lead New Kent’s Trojans to a fourth place team finish in Wednesday’s Conference 25 cross-country meet at Park View-South Hill. Carlin ran the 3.1-mile course in 17:02. The Trojans’ Tyler Brightwell (12th, 18:07), Yuri Frazier (22nd, 19:10), Michael Stevenson (26th, 19:25), and Holden Minor (27th, 19:26) completed New Kent’s scoring. Christian Lysek (29th, 19:36) and Justin Stewart (38th, 20:39) also competed for New Kent. The Trojans scored 89 points. New Kent Middle School football finishes 7-1, tie for regular season championship
New Kent Middle School’s football team recently completed the regular season, finishing 7-1 in the Bay Rivers District and earning a share of the conference championship. The finish by the Lions marks a memorable season, finishing with one of their best records in the history of the program and ending in a three-way tie for the top spot. It seemed like Charles City’s Panthers could do no wrong during an Oct. 24 football contest against the visiting King & Queen Tigers. And even when the Panthers did, they made amends for their mistakes quickly. The host Panthers scored the first 35 points of the Tidewater District contest and never looked back in a 68-6 thrashing of the visiting Tigers. A lot of positives surfaced for New Kent’s Trojans even though they lost 41-7 tonight (Thursday) to Lafayette’s unbeaten Rams, the state’s number two ranked 3A football team. Shaking off fumble and punt returns for touchdowns that handed the host Rams a 14-0 lead before the game reached three minutes old, the Trojans maintained possession for most of the first half, relegating the potent Ram offense to the sidelines. Carlin, New Kent run past Mathews, Colonial Heights
Andrew Carlin toured New Kent’s 3.1-mile cross-country course in 17:02 to finish first overall and lead the host Trojans past Mathews and Colonial Heights in Wednesday’s meet. The Trojans scored 23 points while Mathews placed second with 34 and Colonial Heights trailed with 80. Carlin finished 37 seconds ahead of his closest challenger. Allen named MEC player of the week
Karley Allen, a former volleyball standout at New Kent High School currently playing for UVA-Wise, has been named Mountain East Conference player of the week for Oct. 13-19. The sophomore recorded 36 kills in one tournament and 39 in another to win the honor. She currently leads the 12-member conference in kills with 286. She is also among the conference leaders in digs. Last season, she was named all-conference second team and finished second in the voting for conference freshman of the year.
