New Kent ends long layoff with 59-43 win over Poquoson
Shaking off the effects of a 17-day, weather-induced layoff, New Kent’s Trojans struggled at times against Poquoson’s invading Islanders. But defense overshadowed offense as the hosts took command late in the first quarter on the way to a 59-43 victory. “It wasn’t pretty, but at least it wasn’t ugly,” said Trojan coach Ronnie Cox after the win. “We haven’t played since Jan. 17, but I’m happy with it,” he said. “It’s sort of like starting the season all over again.” The Trojans sputtered at the start, enabling the Islanders to cling to an early advantage. Lady Trojans hang tough but fall at end to Rams
Determined not to suffer another blowout at the hands of Lafayette’s Lady Rams, New Kent’s Lady Trojans remained within striking distance for most of their Feb. 6 clash. Unfortunately for the hosts, the Rams managed sufficient cushion for a 44-36 win. Early on, New Kent dominated. Adrienne Goodlet’s steal and lay-in followed by Anna Mathis’ basket in the paint and a Brittany LaPrade three staked the hosts to a quick 7-0 lead. Late run lifts Smithfield over New Kent
Smithfield’s invading Packers staged a late 14-2 run to break open what had been a nip-and-tuck basketball affair on Feb. 11, handing New Kent’s host Trojans a 67-57 setback, the team’s fourth loss in a row. The four setbacks have come over a span of five days thanks to bad weather forcing teams to insert makeup games around regular contests as the season rapidly winds down. Charles City Lady Panthers used a balance scoring attack as they cruised to a 62-21 victory over the visiting King & Queen Lady Tigers during a Feb. 6 Tidewater District contest. The hosts took the lead for good just after the six-minute mark in the first half as Jessica Hill converted an easy lay-up. Antonio Harris pumped in the first 10 points of the fourth quarter while the Panthers held the visiting Middlesex Chargers to just four in the final frame as the hosts claimed a 63-48 victory during Tuesday’s night Tidewater District match-up.
