Tickets for 2022 Colonial Downs horse racing on sale now

Premium tickets are now on sale for the 2022 Colonial Downs Racing Season. Beginning July 11, races will run every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, with post time beginning at 1:45 p.m. There will be 27 days of racing, which includes the Virginia Derby on Tuesday, Sept. 6, with a $300,000 purse, along with the $200,000 Virginia Oaks that will take place on both days. New Kent boys’ tennis split opening week matches

New Kent High School boys’ tennis team split a pair of contests last week to open the 2022 Spring season. The Trojans began the year with a 5-4 win over Colonial Heights on Mar. 15. Lady Trojans capture Shoot the Gun & Run Invitational title behind three wins from Hathaway, Massey

Powered by three wins from both Julia Hathaway and Kori Massey, New Kent’s Lady Trojans claimed the 8th Annual Shoot the Gun and Run Track and Field Invitational held Saturday on their home track. Hathaway earned first place finishes in the girls’ 100-meter dash (13.35), 400-meter dash (59.97), and long jump (14’10½”). Massey swept both sets of hurdles, winning the 100-meter distance with a time of 17.42 and the 300-meter race in 51.26. Charles City juniors Janiya Washington and Nevaeh Coney each racked up a pair of runner-up spots during the Mar. 17 home track and field meet for the Panthers. Washington finished as runner-up in the girls’ 100-meter and 200-meter dash, posting times of 14.21 and 29.62, respectively. Charles City’s Coney finishes seventh in triple jump at state competition

Charles City High School’s Nevaeh Coney leaped to a personal best in the girls’ triple jump competition on her way to finishing seventh at the Group 1A/2A State Championship meet held Mar. 2-3 at Liberty University. Coney garnered a mark of 31’6” in the event, topping her previous best by more than two feet and scoring two points for the Lady Panthers. Her two points helped Charles City finish 28th at the meet, with Glenvar winning the girls’ championship. Coney was the only participant for Charles City in the championship meet.

Legendary New Kent athletes Pollard, Otey selected for Virginia High School League Hall of Fame

Two former standout athletes of New Kent County High School have been selected as part of the Virginia High School League’s (VHSL) Class of 2022. Mia Pollard and Kiamesha Otey will both be inducted during a ceremony on Sunday, Apr. 24, at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Charlottesville. Pollard was a stand-out athlete in both outdoor track and field and basketball. She was a member of the track and field team won four consecutive district, region, and state outdoor track and field championships from 1983-86, outscoring teams by herself in 1985 and 1986. Lakeland uses strong second half to pull away from New Kent for regional championship

In 2018, New Kent’s Lady Trojans bounced the Lakeland Lady Cavaliers from the Region 3A playoffs. During the Mar. 1 rematch, it was a revitalized Lakeland program that prevented New Kent from claiming another regional title.
