Inconsistent Trojans fall victim to Smithfield pressure

By Robb Johnson | February 1, 2022 9:58 pm

Consistency has been an area that New Kent High School’s boys’ basketball team has been looking for throughout the 2021-22 campaign. And after stringing together two consecutive wins, another setback has left another thorn of frustration in the Trojans’ path to find a way to maintain their positive momentum. Using pressure and forcing several mistakes, the Smithfield Packers coasted to a 68-43 win over the New Kent Trojans, preventing the host from having a winning record in the late states of the season. Things looked well for the hosts, as Kyle Diggs pumped in four points for New Kent as…

Panthers drop game to top ten West Point, remains winless in season

By Robb Johnson | January 28, 2022 4:38 pm

Charles City High School’s boys’ basketball schedule wouldn’t be easy for anybody, let alone a smaller, more inexperienced team. Playing their fourth game in four days and facing their second top ten team in the state in the West Point Pointers, the hosting Panthers found themselves down 27 before their first field goal dropped as they fell 71-27 to the visiting West Point Pointers. After Charles City stopped the Pointers on their initial possession, an inbounds play saw 6’8” Cade McCulloch dunk the ball with ease for the visitors. From there, West Point reeled off 25 more points before Charles…

New Kent toughens up on court, takes down Tabb in competitive contest

By Robb Johnson | January 28, 2022 3:31 pm

New Kent’s Trojans have been looking to find some sense of consistency through the season while navigating a tough Bay Rivers District schedule. That was the case in a Jan. 26 contest when the Tabb Tigers entered the Trojans’ gymnasium. But the toughness of New Kent proved vital as the hosts defeated Tabb 71-66 to earn a closely contested game. Tabb didn’t make matters easy for the hosts. The visitors started off the game with a 12-5 run, holding the Trojans to a mere field goal over that span. But after New Kent sank three of four free throws, the…

Middlesex blitzes Charles City, cruises to Tidewater District victory

By Robb Johnson | January 24, 2022 10:20 pm

Charles City’s Panthers have faced setbacks for most of the season. From precautionary quarantines to winter weather postponements, Charles City’s team full of underclassmen had yet to find time to gel. Monday’s Tidewater District contest against the Middlesex Chargers was an example of what a more experienced team could do when they are continuously on the court. The visiting Chargers used their size and an overwhelming press to blitz past Charles City 87-22 in a matchup to keep the Panthers winless. After Middlesex’s big man Malachi Dandy scored the opening two baskets, Charles City’s Mitchell Whitehead banked a three-pointer to…

Warhill outmuscles New Kent 64-57 in boys’ basketball clash

By Robb Johnson | January 21, 2022 12:30 pm

A team’s record can be deceiving in sports. And New Kent’s Trojans found that out the hard way heading into a Jan. 19 contest against the Warhill Lions. Despite only posting one win on the year, the visiting Lions outmuscled New Kent 64-57 in the Bay Rivers District match-up. New Kent’s defense had trouble early on in the game, as Lions’ wingman Jacobi Cherry drained a three-pointer. That long distance connection would be one of seven that the visitors would drain in the first half alone. While the Trojans trailed by one (15-14), it was another one from Cherry and…

Mueller pumps in seven trifectas, catapults Lady Trojans to 57-26 victory over Jamestown

By Robb Johnson | January 7, 2022 2:38 am

One of the wishes that New Kent Lady Trojans’ head basketball coach wished for Christmas was for his team to play better defense. Apparently Santa Claus not only heard that desire, but also threw in a few extra presents. Behind seven three-pointers and a 30-point performance from McKenna Mueller, New Kent Lady Trojans coasted to a 57-26 victory over the Jamestown Lady Eagles in the Jan. 6 Bay Rivers District match-up to kick off the new year. After falling behind 4-0 to the winless eagles, New Kent quickly reversed the pace of the game. The hosts tied the game up…
