Lady Panthers charge back from 16 down to topple Surry

Down by 16 points in the third quarter, Charles City’s Lady Panthers staged a furious comeback to catch Surry’s visiting Cougars heading into the final period. The hosts then rode momentum through the last period to thwart Surry’s upset bid with a 56-50 win. The Jan. 4 victory kept Charles City’s Tri-Rivers District record unblemished at 2-0. The Lady Panthers are 7-3 overall. “We got taken out in the first half,” a relieved Lady Panther coach Andre Jones said afterward. Rivalry eclipses team play as NK clashes with Charles City

Basketball rivalry games of the New Kent-Charles City variety guarantee a full house anxious to see who wins bragging rights between the two schools located just 20 minutes apart. Coaches on both sides, however, would just as soon see the rivalry aspect watered down a bit. New Kent won the latest renewal with an 81-63 triumph on Charles City’s floor, but what transpired left a sour taste in the mouths of both head coaches. Lady Panthers step up to foil upset-minded Lady Trojans

New Kent’s Lady Trojans entered Charles City’s gym intent on taking Lady Panther leading scorer Jolisa Williams out of the game. And the strategy worked. A diamond-and-one defense, utilizing one Lady Trojan to guard Williams man-to-man while the other four formed a diamond-shaped zone in the lane, held her to six first quarter points and shut her out in quarter two. But that’s when other Lady Panthers stepped up. Trojans 2nd in invitational

New Kent wrestlers amassed 197.5 points to finish second in the annual New Kent Invitational wrestling tournament held at the school last Saturday. Morehead (N.C.) High School won the tourney with 206 points. Brentsville finished third with 143 points. Haga wins Philip Morris scholarship

Kasie Haga, a sophomore at Bridgewater College and resident of Quinton, is one of five Bridgewater students to win scholarships in statewide competition among 15 member colleges in the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges consortium. Haga won a $10,000 scholarship from Philip Morris USA. Norfolk Southern and Hilb Rogel and Hobbs provided other scholarships. With the scholarship, Haga has an opportunity to be considered for a paid summer internship with Philip Morris

Creamer wins NKMS geography bee

Blythe Creamer, an eighth grader at New Kent Middle School, won the school-level competition of the National Geography Bee on Dec. 14 The school-level bee, at which students answer oral questions on geography, was the first round of the 20th National Geography Bee, sponsored by the National Geographic Society. Ryan Sherenco and Tyler Rodriguez tied for second place. Several suspects arrested on felony charges in New Kent

New Kent sheriff’s personnel have arrested several individuals in recent weeks on at least one felony charge each. According to sheriff’s office reports, those arrested and the charges they face are: –William Lee Riley II, 49, of 1803 Womack Drive in Hampton, who is charged with one felony count each of attempting to assault a police officer, vandalism, and throwing an object at an occupied vehicle. Deputy Eric Benninger arrested Riley on Jan. 1 after receiving a complaint that the suspect was throwing a jacket at vehicles on Route 33 in Eltham. A woman identified as Riley’s sister told the…

NK grand jury indicts five

Five individuals, including two men accused of eluding police and assaulting county deputy sheriffs in separate, unrelated incidents, have been indicted by a New Kent Circuit Court grand jury. Convening on Monday, the grand jury indicted: –Garrie Gene Neal, 41, of 9606 Holland Street in Richmond, on one count each of felony eluding police, assaulting a police officer, and grand larceny. The offenses are alleged to have occurred last Oct. 25. Neal allegedly stole a 1999 Ford Escort belonging to Deborah Odell and assaulted New Kent Deputy David Mehalko; –Timothy Stuart Taylor, 22, of 1304 Chipper Court in Highland Springs,…

Cocaine, not baking powder, in underwear, defendant admits

A Charles City man, who claimed it was baking soda in a small plastic bag he swallowed as deputies tried to restrain him, now admits the white, powdery substance was actually cocaine. Andre Dion Tabb, 41, of 19300 Horseshoe Road, owned up to bag’s contents under questioning from Judge Thomas B. Hoover during the defendant’s sentencing on Jan. 8 on concealed weapon and obstruction of justice convictions in Charles City Circuit Court. Judge upholds prison time recommended by NK jury

A New Kent Circuit Court judge has upheld a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence recommended by a jury for a Jamaican national convicted of attempting to possess close to 24 pounds of marijuana valued at over $61,000 that was shipped into the county from California. Judge Thomas B. Hoover abided by the jury’s decision during a Jan. 7 hearing, labeling as reasonable the jury’s recommendation in the case involving Michael G.
