Renee Silver tossed a no-hitter in six innings of work, and her New Kent Lady Trojan teammates posted all the runs they would need in the third inning as the hosts topped Jamestown 3-1 in Bay Rivers District softball. Silver struck out 15 Eagles in the May 14 clash. The visitors scored a lone unearned run in the seventh inning with Sarah Baldwin pitching in relief. “Renee has been pitching great over the second half of the season,” her coach, Betsey Lane, said. “Even different umpires and players say her pitches are moving and she’s got good speed.” With Silver…

New Kent’s Trojans won six events on the way to a lopsided victory in the Bay River District boys’ track and field meet. The Trojans amassed 165 points in last Thursday’s meet at York High to far outdistance runner-up Grafton’s 81. The combined point total of Grafton and third place finisher Jamestown (80) fell short of equaling the Trojans’ output. “I’m a little bit surprised,” said New Kent coach Mont Linkenauger. “I thought it would be closer. I didn’t think we’d win it this big.” The Trojans built a comfortable lead in the field category, taking first in three of…

A decade ago, building cell phone communication towers ranked as a controversial topic prompting heated debate in New Kent and other localities. Times, however, have changed as evidenced by the recent rash of tower building applications in the county. Five applications before the county in the past two months have generated little to no public opposition. The reasons are varied, but apparently aesthetics has taken a back seat to service. Most people own cell phones and thus demand the improved service and fewer dropped calls that strategic tower placement brings, one county official recently noted. Then if a tower site…

Despite urging from one school system critic to reinstate a public comment session for non-agenda items, Charles City School Board members are not budging off last month’s decision to permanently remove the session from their monthly meeting agenda. Steve Fuhrmann, a county resident and frequent School Board critic, asked the board during its May 18 meeting to rescind its decision. Board members voted last month to remove the non-agenda comment period, touching off a heated exchange that ended with one audience member ordered to leave. Board chairman Roy Campbell later said anyone with a non-agenda concern must contact the School…

Citing past issues of illegal operation, Charles City’s Board of Supervisors has denied a permit request that would allow the owner of a Rottweiler breeding kennel in the county to remain in business. In a unanimous 3-0 decision Tuesday night, supervisors turned down the request by Linda Howard, owner of Big Dog Kennel located at 5226 North Warriner Road. Supervisors pointed to Howard continuing to sell dogs after the county handed her a May 17, 2009 deadline to cease all operations. Last Dec. 17, county planning officials and the sheriff’s office set up a sting operation whereby an undercover officer…

A public hearing hosted by the Board of Supervisors on New Kent’s proposed $50.2 million budget for the next fiscal year attracted only a handful of county residents. Instead, last night’s session generated sharp exchanges between District 4 Supervisor Stran Trout and two of his colleagues over budget alterations Trout is pushing for approval. Trout is urging the board to refrain from closing the county’s trash stations one day per week as is currently proposed in next year’s budget. That suggestion appears to have strong board support. But Trout’s recommendations for chipping in money to help pave the way for…

Charles City’s Lady Panther softball team is flirting with a winning record and is closing out its most successful season in recent memory. But Windsor’s invading Dukes weren’t impressed during a May 13 Tri-Rivers District encounter. Windsor jumped on the hosts for 10 first inning runs and never looked back in gaining a 16-0 win. The outcome evened Charles City’s record at 3-3 in the district and 5-5 overall. The Lady Panthers had little success in overcoming the early deficit thanks to Duke hurler Tiffany Rapp who struck out nine. The hosts were unable to mount a serious scoring threat…
