United States Department of Agriculture has mailed ballots to farmers and ranchers across the country for the 2015 Farm Service Agency (FSA) County Committee elections. “County committee members represent the farmers and ranchers in their communities,” said Val Dolcini, Farm Service Agency Administrator. “Producers elected to these committees have always played a vital role in local agricultural decisions.” Farmers and ranchers will receive ballets and will have until Dec. 7 to postmark them to return. Oliver Whitehead, a native of Charles City, is the first recipient of the Small Farm Outreach Program’s (SFOP) Volunteer of the Year award from Virginia State University. Whitehead, a retired serviceman from the United States Navy, received the award for his contributions and volunteerism. He began his gardening at a young age and now devotes an acre and a half of his 35-acre property to growing 43 varieties of vegetables that he donates. Located at 3300 New Kent Highway, Suite E, Quinton, the business provides daily homemade daily donuts, coffee, and custom orders. Owner Dominick C. Beasley Sr. and co-owners Dominick Beasley Jr. and Madson Beasley started the business because it was a unique business and wanted to continue to carry on a family tradition. Being a poll worker in New Kent, I felt that we had a good campaign election in New Kent. I was very pleased with sheriff-elect Joe McLaughlin’s humbleness and his opponent, Captain Charles Gardner, who did his part giving the voters a choice. This year’s locations are New Kent Gymnastics Center, located at 6530 Emmaus Church Road, Patsy’s Restaurant, 9311 Pocahontas Trail, and T&C Hair, 2581 New Kent Highway. Angel Trees are used to help sponsor a child in need during the holiday season. Families can also be sponsored by calling 966-9209.
