COVID-19 test kit site available in Charles City

Virginia’s Department of Health (VDH) will be offering a COVID-19 test kit site for residents of Charles City and New Kent County who are displaying common symptoms of the virus. Testing will be available on Friday, May 15, from 9-11:30 a.m. at the Chickahominy Tribal Center, located at 8200 Lott Cary Road, Providence Forge, Virginia (Located in Charles City County). Pre-registration is required and all of those interested will be pre-screened for common symptoms. Pre-registration may be arranged by calling (804) 365-3340 and must be completed by May 14, 12 p.m.

Heritage Public Library offering curbside service beginning May 11

Both branches of Heritage Public Library will begin to offer curbside service to patrons. Beginning on May 11, patrons will be able to check out physical items from the library (books, DVDS, etc.) from the building. Patrons can put books and other items on hold by visiting https://heritagepubliclibrary.org or call 652-2450 or 966-2480. Curbside pick-up will be available Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Additional library services are available online at the aforementioned link.

VCU Medical Center in New Kent to open doors on June 1

A freestanding emergency center in New Kent County will open its doors on June 1. Representatives from Virginia Commonwealth University’s (VCU) Health System and New Kent County announced the opening of the VCU Health Emergency Center in New Kent through a press release. “We are ready to safely and responsibly serve New Kent County residents with emergency care in the area where they live,” said Melinda Hancock, Chief Administrative and Financial Officer at VCU Health System. “COVID-19 will be with us for a long time, but medical emergencies have not stopped during the pandemic.” Originally, the facility was supposed to…

Positive signs: New Kent High School staff journeys out to recognize Class of 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on many organizations and businesses. Probably at the top of list of impacted groups is the graduating seniors from high schools across the country. And while social distancing has ended spring activities as well as face-to-face interactions for many, New Kent High School staff and volunteers wanted to make sure members of the Class of 2020 would not be forgotten. Sharp named medical director of Cumberland Hospital

Cumberland Hospital for Children and Adolescents in New Kent has appointed Dr. Brett Sharp as its new medical director. Sharp is a triple board physical with 29 years of clinical experience and has served in a number of staff, private practice and medical director roles, as well as a pediatrician and pediatric psychiatrist. Sharp, who assumed his position on April 20, will oversee medical care to patients at the hospital that deals with children and adolescents who have a chronic illness, brain injury, or neurological impairment. The hospital remains open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
