Two Charles City County women have been honored on the Women’s Monument on Capitol Square in Richmond. Anna Bland, who was principle in a lawsuit, and Mary Byrd, a planter, had their names inscribed on the Wall of Honor. Their names are among 230 Virginia women who made unique contributions to the state’s culture and history.
Sydney Richard, the valedictorian of Charles City High School’s Class of 2016, has been inducted into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi during the Spring 2019 semester. Richard was initiated at Old Dominion University and is one of 30,000 students to earn the honor nationwide each year. In order to earn the distinction, a student must be in the top 10 percent of seniors or top 7.5 percent to earn eligibility. The honor society recognizes students who “promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others.”
Amy Hicks, owner and operator of Amy’s Garden in Charles City, Virginia, have been recognized by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) as a certified grower of a large variety of organic vegetables, small fruits, and flowers on the farm. Last Saturday, hundreds of voters convened at a convention to elect the delegate for the 97th District. I filed my application to become a delegate, participated in the mass meeting in New Kent, and I followed the process closely over many weeks. Chris Peace also attended the mass meetings.
