Editorial: Colonial Downs has revived New Kent County

After nearly five years of waiting, the doors of Colonial Downs reopened to the public, albeit with the new addition of historic horse racing machines. The question that New Kent leaders were probably thinking is that would it be enough to help the county return to prominence. The answer looks to be a resounding “yes.” When Colonial Downs closed in 2014, New Kent County loss approximately $400,000 a year from the track’s revenue. New Kent JDR Court launches Hope Card program

New Kent County’s Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court has launched a program to assist people who have been the victim of family abuse, stalking, and/or sexual assault. In conjunction with the New Kent Victim Witness program, the Hope Card Program allows individuals to request a wallet-sized card that summarizes the protective order’s most important details. The card is available to anyone with a valid protective order that spans at least 12 months.
