NKJWC offering scholarship

New Kent Junior Woman’s Club will be offering two scholarships to graduating seniors. The organization will give two $1,000 scholarships to recipients who will be graduating New Kent High School this year. Applications are available inside the school’s guidance office and are due May 11.

New Kent Middle School student to spend six weeks in Spain as part of foreign language program

Joseph DuVal, an eighth grader at New Kent Middle School, has been accepted to a six-week teen summer language program in Spain. Through the Greenheart International Education program, DuVal will be traveling to Salamanca, Spain to continue his studies in the foreign language. He completed two essays along with a photo essay as part of the application process. The program will include 20 hours of week of classroom instruction in the Spanish language as well as an additional 10 hours of organized activities. DuVal was selected as a partial scholarship winner for his journey, receiving $1,000 for his summer excursion.

I had the dubious honor of reading 27 essays last week as part of a contest provided by Charles City High School’s PTA. The prompt of the writing was entitled, “What can I do to make Charles City County a better place?” There is one thing for sure that I learned from reading these essays; the kids know what they want to see in the county for it to thrive and survive. Bushhouse named as Goldwater scholarship recipient

David Bushhouse, the 2015 Salutatorian of New Kent High School, has been named a 2018 Goldwater Scholar recipient. A biology major at Hampden-Sydney College, Bushhouse is one of eight Virginians to receive the award. Students from more than 2,000 colleges and universities take part in applying for the scholarship. The Goldwater Scholarship is the nation’s premier undergraduate scholarship in natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering. Bushhouse was recognized for his ongoing research on tumor immunology.
