Editorial: Those who leave still care about Charles City and New Kent

When a person leaves Charles City or New Kent, it is usually to pursue an education or further a career. But just because that person chooses to depart the area doesn’t mean that they don’t want the best for their hometown. This past weekend, I had the privilege to take my annual trip to Emmittsburg, Maryland to visit my friend and Mount St. Mary’s head coach Jamion Christian. Local students recognized for academic honors at John Tyler Community College

Several local students have been named to either the Honors’ List or Dean’s List at John Tyler Community College for the Fall 2017 semester. Laurie Burnette and Javel Jefferson, both of Charles City, Nina Brundle of Quinton, and Matthew Woodson of Lanexa were named to the Honors’ List for the Fall semester. Cheyanne Cotman of Charles City received Dean’s List accolades. Gardy wins surveying awards

New Kent surveyor David R. Gardy of Gardy and Associates P.C. was announced as the first-place winner in the Subdivision Plats at the Virginia Association of Surveyors General Membership Meeting on Jan. 18-20. The annual contest judges adherence to the minimum standards set by the National Society of Professional Surveyors. Gardy also finished second in boundary/cadastral maps (miscellaneous maps), boundary line adjustment plat, and subdivision plats.

Editorial: Gun laws are not the solution to gun control

First, let me send my prayers and condolences not only to those in Florida who loss their lives in the mass shooting, but also to everybody who has lost a loved one due to an act of violence.
