New Kent’s Community Development Corporation (NKCDC), through a partnership with New Kent Parks and Recreation, has announced the winners of the summer camp poster and essay contests. Essay contest winners are Olivia Carey (1st place), Victoria Carey (2nd place), and Kyle Gibson (3rd place). Poster contest winners are Morgan Miller (1st Place), Zoe Doucet (2nd place), and Beau Morgheim (3rd place). The contests allowed participants to artistically express their knowledge and understanding of financial literacy and future goals. I think the title of this editorial is self-explanatory. Every time I travel down Adkins Road in Charles City, I pass Fire Station #1. On the sign, it reads “volunteer.” It’s heartbreaking on a personal note as I know the struggles of getting firefighters (and EMS workers) for the county. In 2017, 33,656 constituents voted in the election for the 97th District representative, more than any of the previous races.
