Several Charles City and New Kent residents were recognized by John Tyler Community College for their high academic achievements for the Spring 2017 semester. Mr. and Mrs. Steven A. Kelly of Mechanicville are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Alissa Renee, to Bruce Lovern Howard Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce L. Howard Sr. of Charles City. Alissa graduated from Lee Davis High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is currently employed at Snagajob. Bruce graduated from Benedictine College Preparatory and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Business from Virginia Military Institute. He is currently employed at Bruce Howard Contracting Inc. An April wedding is planned.
New Kent Department of Social Services employee Nancy St. John Goodman is the recipient of the 2017 Helen J. Napps Award for Excellence by the Virginia Coalition for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (VCPEA). The award recognizes professional excellence by individuals who work in the area of elder abuse prevention and elder abuse protection. Goodman was nominated for this award by her supervisor and co-workers at New Kent Department of Social Service. All nominees for the Helen J. Roads in eastern Charles City will experience delays during the early morning hours on July 8 due to a triathlon. The Rev3 triathlon will begin in James City County and enter Charles City. Traffic is expected to be impacted between 5 a.m.-11 a.m. The race will take place on Route 5 (John Tyler Memorial Highway), with part of the event also happening on the Virginia Capital Trail. The event, which takes place over two days, expects no impact to travel on Sunday.
Heritage Public Library is conducting a survey pertaining to the proposed new library in Charles City. Questions on the survey center around hours of operation, programs, and other preferences. The survey is available on the library’s website at www.heritagepubliclibrary.org. The paper format of the survey can be picked up from either the New Kent or Charles City branch. Surveys are available until September. The new library facility in Charles City has a completion date sometime in the fourth quarter of 2018.
Casey Fleming, a Providence Forge resident, completed required to graduate from McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland. Fleming took part in the school’s 147th commencement ceremony on May 20 where more than 600 undergraduate and graduate degrees were presented. Fleming earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in accounting economics and business administration.
