Allen Jones, a 2017 graduate of New Kent High School, was named as Bottom of the Bridge LaSertoma’s Youth Service Award winner. Jones received a $100 monetary gift after being recognized for his volunteer services at his church, local thrift store, and local daycare center. He also displayed qualities of leadership, communication, and mentoring skills while assisting elementary school students in math.
Bottom of the Bridge LaSertoma has announced the awarding of two scholarships to recent graduates of New Kent High School. Haley Ashford and Kevin Doran were each awarded $2,000 from the organization during a recent recognition ceremony. Ashford was also the recipient of an additional $1,000 from LaSertoma International. She will enroll in Randolph College in Lynchburg and intends to major in marketing and museum programs. Doran will be attending George Mason University this fall and will pursue his studies in computer science.
St. Peter’s Parish has announced the awarding of four one-year scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each to recent graduates of New Kent High School. Lucy Adamson, Sherese Bonner, Gunnar Carlson, and Justin Mitchell were announced as award winners at a recent ceremony. Adamson will be studying crop science at Virginia Tech, Bonner plans to major in pharmacy at the University of Virginia, Carlson intends to study international relations at Virginia Tech, and the area of marine biology will be Mitchell’s intended focus of study at the College of William and Mary. Zacheriah Quimby, a native of Providence Forge, was named to High Point University’s Dean’s List for the Spring 2017 semester. Quimby, who graduated from New Kent High School in 2016, is majoring in secondary education with an emphasis in history. In order to be named to the university’s Dean’s List, a student must accumulate a grade-point average of 3.5 or better.
Sydney Richard, the 2016 valedictorian of Charles City High School, has been named to Old Dominion University’s Dean’s List for the Spring 2017 semester. In order to be named to the prestigious list, a student must accumulate a grade-point average 3.4 or higher while taking at least 12 credit hours. Richard is completing her first year at the university and plans to pursue her studies in biology.
