Arts Alive offering scholarships

Arts Alive Inc. has announced that two scholarships will be available to local students. The C. Herbert Brown Jr. Performing Arts Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior who is from the Arts Alive service areas of West Point, King William, New Kent, and King & Queen who plan to major or minor in performing arts or music education. The Andy Conklin Visual Arts Scholarship is available to high school seniors who reside in one of the aforementioned areas who plan to major and minor in studio arts, art history, or art education. Virginia Gems place at recent competitions

The Virginia Gems, based out of New Kent Gymnastics Center, recently had two teams place in the Extreme Grand National Championship competition. Teams from the Tiny and Youth division both earned second place finishes at the event. The two teams currently have won four bids to future competition, three Grand Champion titles, a high score award, and a national title. The Level 4 gymnasts also reaped success, placing first at the Nation’s Capital Cup competition, marking their third win in a row.

Kindergarten registration is Apr. 13 and Apr. 20

One of the biggest milestones in a child’s journey is starting school and being ready to succeed. On Thursday, Apr. 13, Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond will hold its seventh annual Regional Kindergarten Campaign for Charles City while New Kent registration will be held on Thursday, Apr. 20. Children who are five years old by Sept. 30 can start kindergarten this upcoming fall, but needs to register. Registration will be held at Charles City Elementary School, George Watkins Elementary School, and New Kent Elementary School. Letter to the Editor: Thanks Eagle Scout for service to construct sign for church

I would like to thank Ben Ward, a Boy Scout, for his efforts in raising funds necessary to coordinate a project that helped Providence United Methodist Church erect a new, beautiful sign in front. His efforts have provided us this sign that will display messages, information, and church programs and events. Ben took on this task as part of his Eagle Scout project and raised all the money required to purchase the sign.
