Chickahominy Health District provides tips to fight Zika Virus, mosquito bites

The Chickahominy Health District that serves Charles City and New Kent counties is providing information and ways to fight mosquitoes that are able to transmit the Zika Virus. Among the mosquitoes that have the capability to carry the virus is the Asian Tiger mosquito. This particular mosquito: -Breeds in standing water that has collected in containers. -Doesn’t breed in ponds or puddles of water over soil. -Live throughout Virginia. -Tend to bite during the day rather than at night. -Is usually immune to pesticide spraying. -Typically spend their lives within a 200-yard area. -Develop into adults in about 10 days….

New Kent Historical Society names middle school contest winners

New Kent Historical Society have announced award winners for its annual writing and art contest for middle school students. In the art division, Clinton Childrers image of Martha Washington earned first place, while Kendal Vorous’ illustration of James Armistead Lafayette earned the runner-up position. In the essay category, Campbell Gowdy’s story on Pocahontas earned her a first place finish in the contest. Finishing as runner up was Kallie Clark, who wrote about James Armistead Lafayette and his contributions as he spied on the British.

Holland attends leadership conference

Haley Holland, a sophomore at New Kent High School, attended the Hugh O’Brian Leadership seminar (HOBY) June 3-5 at James Madison University. Holland was chosen among her peers to participate in the summit geared to giving back to the community. Attendees pledged to complete 100 hours of volunteer service and use hands-on activities to improve personal leadership skills and make a positive impact in their community. She was among 250 students selected from around the state. Haley is the daughter of Michael and Ann Holland of New Kent.

Taking Root Farm Tour names locations for 2016

Virginia Cooperative Extension Office has announced locations for the 2016 Taking Root Farm Tour. This year the tour will be at Poplar Springs Farm (5810 Emmaus Church Road, Providence Forge) and Hockaday Sheep Farm (10910 Carriage Road, Providence Forge). The tour will feature four different kinds of farming operations at these two locations. Among operations and area of interest include the raising of sheep and beef cows, wool spinning, wine making, using farm equipment, and more. Former New Kent Sheriff to serve as Grand Marshal for county fair

Former New Kent Sheriff F.W. “Wakie” Howard Jr. will serve as the Grand Marshal for the 45th annual New Kent County Fair on Aug. 12-14 at New Kent High School. Howard will be recognized at 10 a.m. as part of the parade as part of opening ceremonies. Activities for this year include live entertainment, 4-H horse rides, face painting, 5K fair race (Saturday morning) and more. Home and garden exhibits will be on display for all three days.
