Two New Kent residents earn Dean’s List recognition at Hampden-Sydney College

Two residents of New Kent were recognized for making the Dean’s List at Hampden-Sydney College. Matthew C. Metheny of New Kent and David Z. Bushhouse of Quinton received the distinguished honor for the Spring 2016 semester. In order to be named to the Dean’s List, a student must maintain a grade point-average of 3.3 or higher. Matthew is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Metheny. David is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Steven G. Bushhouse.

New Kent youth to lead YADAPP conference

Two New Kent youth have been selected as peer leaders for the Youth Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Project (YADAPP) from July 18-22 at Longwood University. Cleniesteen Lloyd and Emily McCartney were among 58 students chosen to conduct activities as volunteer leaders during the week long conference. They will be part of a staff that will guide student participants through programs and help develop strategies to prevent high school substance use within their own school and community. New Kent EDA announces 2016 award winners

New Kent’s Economic Development Authority (EDA) held its annual business awards ceremony on May 19 at Royal New Kent Golf Club. Guest speaker Congressman Rob Wittman addressed more than 170 in attendance for the festivities. County residents and business owners voted for award winners in six different categories. This year’s winners are Stay & Play Childcare (At Your Service Award), Hole Family Donuts (Made in New Kent), McDonald’s of Quinton (Workforce Development), Third Base Grill (Best Small Business), Cumberland Hospital (Best Large Business), and Becky Ringley (Business Citizen of the Year).

Loving named to Dean’s List at Liberty University

Barbara Jean Loving, a Charles City resident, has been named to the Dean’s List of Liberty University for the Spring 2016 semester. In order to qualify for the list, students must be enrolled full-time and accumulate a grade-point average of 3.5 or better.

Watkins first grade instructor named state ‘Super Teacher’

George W. Watkins Elementary School first grade teacher Courtney Lewis is in a class by herself — almost. She is one of only eight teachers statewide to receive a 2016 Virginia Lottery Super Teacher Award. Recipients, however, come close to winning the lottery. All receive $2,000 in classroom supplies, compliments of The Supply Room Companies, along with a $2,000 cash award from the Virginia Lottery. A surprise presentation in the guise of a storytelling assembly for first graders took place Wednesday afternoon in Watkins’ auditorium. Bridgewater College names two Quinton residents to Dean’s List

Two Quinton residents, both juniors at Bridgewater College, have been named to the Dean’s List. Albert FitzPatrick and Josiah Scholosser, both majoring in business administration, were recognized for achieving a grade-point average of 3.4 or better at the liberal arts college. The duo was recognized for maintaining the high academic standards during the 15-week Spring semester.
