Local students named to RCC honor society

Rappahannock Community College’s Alpha Lambda Omicron chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society inducted students who reside in Charles City and New Kent County during an Apr. 22 ceremony. Christian Babin, Patricia Dalton, Julianna Jones, and Mathew Osborne, all of New Kent, and Sarah Saunders of Charles City were recognized for their outstanding academic achievements. In order to be named to the society, a student must maintain a grade-point average of 3.5 or better. Phi Theta Kappa is the official honor society for two-year colleges worldwide and has more than two million members.

Letter to the Editor: Says one-cent should be added to NK tax rate

It is truly pathetic when opening the pages of the New Kent-Charles City Chronicle to note that New Kent Supervisors are still dithering over whether or not to add a cent to local taxes. A cent should be added in order to provide teachers and other local employees with a respectable and meaningful salary increase. Arguing over this minimal increase is both shortsighted and mean spirited, to say the least. James Murphy Providence Forge

Almeida recognized by RCC program

Rhiannon Almeida, a resident of New Kent, was honored by Rappahannock Community College during an Apr. 20 reception. Almeida received a certificate for her participation in the college’s work-study program. She was one of 25 people to receive the honor. The reception was held to express appreciation by supervisors to those who do tasks to make their jobs easier.

LaSertoma announces award winners

The Bottom of the Bridge LaSertoma Club announced two New Kent County students as Youth Service award winners. Carly Yates, a seventh grade student, was awarded a $100 check for her volunteer services with Chesapeake Bay Foundation and James River Cleanup committee. She is the first middle school recipient of the award. Sherese Bonner, a high school junior, was awarded a $50 check for her volunteer services at Randolph Medical Center during the summer months and assisting as a speech language pathologist.

NKMS Odyssey of the Mind team qualifies for national event

Bottom of the Bridge LaSertoma Odyssey of the Mind team members qualified for the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals to be held at Iowa State University May 25-28. The team of New Kent Middle School students finished in first place in regional competition and as runner-up in state competition as they tackled the long-term problem synopsis “Aesop Gone Viral.” The group performed a skit to tackle the fable through narration, performance, and costume design. The performance also had to conclude a character that makes a wrong conclusion about the moral and is corrected. The group is currently accepting donations…
