“Grab-and-Go” meals will be available during the Summer for all children age 18 and under in New Kent County. Beginning June 21, Grab-and-Go meals will be available for pick-up on Thursdays. Distributions will be held at New Kent Middle School from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., and at George Watkins Elementary School from 3-5 p.m. Meals are pre-packaged and most can be eaten cold or reheated. Deliveries will be available on Wednesdays and accommodations can be made to pick up meals on another day by contacting Leslie Smith at 966-8508 or at lsmith@nkcps.k12.va.us.

Second Elam Baptist Church in New Kent held a drive-thru distribution for Hurricane/COVID-19 preparedness on May 22. Through donations from a number of organizations, bags with safety items were handed out to several people. COVID-19 shots were also given onsite as well as lunches, nonperishable food items, and door prizes.
New Kent resident James Brooks was named to the President’s List at Shenandoah University for the Spring 2021 semester. In order to accumulate the honor, a student must obtain a grade-point average of 3.90 or better while taking at least 12 credit hours in coursework.
Several local students were recognized for their academic achievement at James Madison University for the Spring 2021 semester. Marisa Turner of New Kent was named to the President’s List. In order to be recognized for the accomplishment, a student must accumulate a grade-point average of 3.9 or better while taking at least 12 credit hours. Fifteen others were recognized on James Madison University’s Dean’s List. In order to make that list, a student must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher while taking at least 12 credit hours. Alexis Williams posted a grade-point average of 4.2 as valedictorian for Charles City High School’s Class of 2021. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, FBLA, Principal’s Council, Delta GEMS, principal’s list, perfect attendance list, Charles City High School Marching Band, girls’ volleyball team, girls’ basketball team, girls’ indoor and outdoor track and field team, Scholastic Bowl team, first state champion in a sport since 2000, and serves as the class president. Alexis will be attending Howard University where she plans to student sports and health sciences. She is the daughter of LaTonya Williams.
Delaney Narron is salutatorian of Charles City High School’s Class of 2021 with a grade-point average of 4.14. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Principal’s Council, Charles City High School Marching Panthers Band, and was captain of the Scholastic Bowl team, leading them to the school’s first regional championship in any activity since 2013. Delaney plans to attend Mary Baldwin University and pursue a degree in criminology. She is the daughter of Candace and Raymond Narron.
