Individual indicted for several crimes stemming from incident at Pine Fork Park in New Kent

An individual who got into an altercation at Pine Fork Park last April now faces several charges after being indicted by a New Kent Grand Jury Monday morning in New Kent Circuit Court. Haley Meila Groves, 26, of the 2700 block of Windsor Shades Lane, Providence Forge, was indicted on two counts of abduction, two counts of misdemeanor assault, and one count each of strangulation, robbery, assault on a law enforcement officer, malicious assault, attempted rape, felony destruction of property, misdemeanor providing a false ID to a police officer, and misdemeanor tampering with a vehicle. Charles City write-ins list top vote getters for school board, directors for soil and water district

Results from write-ins for Charles City County have listed the top vote getters for District 1 and District 3’s school board, along with the top two choices for the Soil and Water Conservation Directors. Marchelle Hampton tallied the most votes for the District 1 school board of Charles City. In District 3, Donna Harwood’s campaign landed her the seat. Larkin G. Scott and Luke G. Scott were written in as top vote getters for directors of the conservation district.

New Kent supervisors defer bond refund request from Preston Hollow LLC

New Kent’s Board of Supervisors have deferred taking any action on a request to refund bonds and finance money for a portion of the Farms of New Kent at the Nov. 15 regular meeting. The deferral comes as no surprise as county leaders still had several questions regarding Preston Hollow LLC (PHLLC) pitch to refund a portion of 2021 bonds for Land Bays IV and V. At the Oct. 31 work session, PHLLC proposed $97 million in bond refunds, with $45 million as new money. King William man indicted for felony eluding in Charles City

A King William man was indicted on two felony charges following Nov. 9 proceedings in Charles City Circuit Court. Phillip Terrall Adkins, 37, of the 1500 block of Dunluce Road, had one charge each of felony eluding and felony child abuse certified by a Charles City grand jury. The indictments allege that Adkins attempted to flee from a Charles City deputy on July 22 and had a child inside of the vehicle at the time of the pursuit.

Charles City man receives four months in jail for discharging firearm illegally

A Charles City man will spend four months in jail for discharging a firearm at multiple relatives following a Nov. 9 sentencing in Charles City Circuit Court. Gary Lee Wade, 55, of the 12900 block of Wilcox Neck Road, received a 12-month sentence with 10 months suspended (two months to serve) on two counts each of misdemeanor reckless handling of a firearm. Five years on each of two charges of attempted unlawful wounding were suspended. During an Aug. 25 trial, Wade entered no contest pleas to the aforementioned charges. New Kent School Board receives overhaul; District 2 New Kent supervisor seat battle remains close

New Kent County’s School Board will receive an entire overhaul according to preliminary results from the New Kent General Election Tuesday night. Newcomers Keith Pagano (District 1), Helena Cunha (District 2), Heather Donbrosky (District 3), Ron Vaught (District 4), and Gregory Reimer (District 5) have all earned spots on New Kent’s School Board for the next term. While Pagano was unchallenged for his seat, Cunha had to defeat Kelly Martin and Elizabeth Remorenko to capture the spot being vacated by Kristen Swynford. A request to refund bonds and finance new money for a portion of the Farms of New Kent CDA was presented at New Kent’s Board of Supervisors’ Tuesday morning work session.
